ON NEW MUSLIM COUPLES AND PUBLIC LAP-DANCING.

— Aladodo Abdus-Salam

From time immemorial, marriage has been a sacred institution, and till the end of time, it’ll never cease to be. Organizing a marriage banquet (Waleematu Nikāh) is an authentic Sunnah traceable to the prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The day of Nikāh is not just a day of joy for the couples-to-be and their respective families, it is also a day of joy and togetherness for friends and well-wishers.

Amidst the unending joy and happiness, Islam has laid down several guidelines which much be strictly followed. One must not be overly joyous to the extent of going against the teachings of Islam.

Today, some Muslims officiate marriage banquets in ways that have never been seen before. This is done to the perfect imitation of the disbelievers and the western world. Rarely would you attend a marriage function by Muslims without having unpleasant musical sound blared in your ears by the DJ. Musical contents promoting obscenities and vulgars words are played to the amusement of attendees. Making a function which is meant to be a gathering of obedience and blessings become a gathering of sins and deviance.

It brings tears to the eyes to see new couples being made to dance in a sensual way to the delight of those present while being cheered on amidst applauses. The DJ gives a shaytanic music to go in line with their dance steps, the new husband sits on a chair, while the new wife dances shamelessly on his thighs; facing and backing him at intervals — to the delight of her new husband and the onlookers. This is indeed the worst of scenes one can come about in a Muslim marriage function. Not only is it haram to do this, but it is indeed a grievous sight to behold. There is nothing wrong in a woman dancing for her husband, what is wrong in dancing publicly for her husband to the delight of many. This indeed is one of the greatest forms of tabarruj (wantonness) as the whole of her body shakes vigorously, not just for the pleasure of her new husband, but for strange men as well.

The prophet warned against couples revealing their sexual relation to a third-party and likened whoever engages in such to a male and female shaytān having sex in the public space, while people are watching.

It was reported from Asmaa bint Yazeed that she was with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and men and women were sitting with him, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, Would any man say what he did with his wife? Would any woman tell others what she did with her husband? The people kept quiet and did not answer. I [Asmaa] said: Yes, by Allaah, O Messenger of Allaah, they (women) do that, and they (men) do that. He said, Do not do that. It is like a male devil meeting a female devil in the road and having intercourse with her whilst the people are watching. (Narrated by Abu Dawood, no. 1/339; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Adaab al-Zafaaf, p.143). Relating this hadith to the painted scene above, would one therefore find pleasure in dancing sensually in public for one’s husband?

It is a total act of shamelessness that scenes like these are being brought into play at Waleematu Nikāh functions under the guise of having fun while it is clearly apparent that it is a means of spreading more evil amongst Muslim folks, another form of misguidance.

As such, it is important to distant oneself from gatherings like this and admonish whoever has such in mind to keep strictly to the injunctions of Allah. The day of Nikāh is a day of obedience, a day of blessings. One should not in anyway incur Allah’s wrath by taking to what he has forbidden.

We ask Allah to purify our deeds, grant us the best of offsprings, and forgive our shortcomings.
