While Shirk ( believing Wallace D. Fard was the mahdi, even Allah in flesh and their embrace of Dianetics) disqualifies members of the Nation Of Islam from being Muslims, their racist ideologies  contradicts the Qur’an and Sunnah. Malcom X said these about them,

– That black people were the original people of the world

– That white people were a race of devils who were created by an evil scientist named Yakub.

– The Nation of Islam believed that black people were superior to white people, and that the demise of the white race was imminent.

– That Islam was the “true religion of black mankind” and that Christianity was “the white man’s religion” that had been imposed upon African Americans by their slave-masters.

– That Wallace Fard Muhammad, the founder of the Nation, was Allah incarnate

– That Elijah Muhammad was his Messenger, or Prophet.

The religion of Islam does not support tribalism, ethnicism and racism. Unfortunately, we have brothers and sisters today who spend their time, money and energy to promote their culture, tribe and race even when there are elements of Shirk in these cultures and several other norms that contradict the fundamental teachings of Islam.

Can one who has a proper understanding of Islam take up promoting the Yoruba culture and sing praises of Orisa Aje said to be the goddess of wealth and economic prosperity when Allah is the best of all providers? Wallahu Khayrun-raaziqeen. How would one wake up in the morning to observe Fajr Salah then after an hour, write about the beauty of Sango and several verses of Ifa? Can one reconcile what is irreconcilable?

The Muslim ‘Ummah is a nation and the true nation of Islam is one on and united by the Qur’an and Sunnah in that the former and the latter guide and guard each man of the Muslim Ummah in his religious and cultural affairs. However, it is important to note that Islam does not frown at what part of any culture that does not contradict Islam.

Drawing the line between Cultural Islam and Islamic Culture, a cultural Muslim believes in the supremacy of his culture, tribe and race even if they contradict Islam while the Muslim who lives his life on the Qur’an and Sunnah is Muslim first. For Cultural Muslims,  they do not want to neglect what their forefathers were on just like the pagan Arabs, Allah says,

If you tell them, “Come to what Allaah has revealed and to the Messenger,” they will reply, “What we found our parents doing is sufficient for us.” Even though their parents knew nothing, nor were they rightly guided. Soorah al-Maa’idah (5): 104.

Therefore, when Allah says in the Qur’an,

O you who have believed, enter into Islam completely [and perfectly] and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy. Soorah al-Baqara : 208

…it was clear. “(Enter Islam perfectly.) Allah thus commanded them to embrace the legislation of the religion of Muhammad in its entirety and to avoid abandoning any part of it” ( Except from the tefisr ). How then does one enter into Islam completely then holding onto one’s culture.

There is Islamic Culture taken from the Qur’an and Sunnah and as Allah says, Muslims are the best of Nations so what culture or nation worth being promoted than Islam’s? Allah says in Surah Bayyina verse 7,

Indeed, they who have believed and done righteous deeds – those are the best of creatures.

Islam as a culture and religion surpasses any other hence a Muslim who spends his time promoting his tribe, race, colour and culture might be heedless and misplacing his priorities.

Ahmad (22978) narrated from Abu Nadrah: Someone who heard the khutbah of the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) on the second of the days of at-Tashreeq told me that he said: “O people, verily your Lord is One and your father is one. Verily there is no superiority of an Arab over a non-Arab or of a non-Arab over an Arab, or of a red man over a black man, or of a black man over a red man, except in terms of taqwa. Have I conveyed the message?” They said: The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) has conveyed the message.
