The first time I saw Brother Ridwan, I thought he was a Mute, but that is not the case. He could speak, but you cannot hear him unless you go very close. You can imagine the frustration of expressing yourself, but you cannot be heard—the same voice we take for granted!
The 21-year-old was born with Congenital Bilateral Vocal Cord Paralysis, he has never been able to speak loudly. His voice has always been faint—barely a whisper. To hear him, you must lean in close. Even then, it’s hard to make out his words. This condition affects the vocal cords’ ability to move and produce sound. Without proper closure of the vocal cords, speaking becomes a struggle, and being heard is nearly impossible. It has deeply affected his ability to connect with others, pursue education, and live confidently.
When I asked why he had been left like that all this while, despite the condition being treatable, the response was: lack of funds. He supports his poor mother by selling bread.
Even more heartbreaking is that he faces discrimination because of his condition, which has greatly affected his self-esteem.
Kindly help us raise the sum of 1.2 million naira for the surgery, hospital stay, and medications. This gesture means the world to the young man.
