BismiLlahi Ar-Rahman Roheem

Salam alaykum WarahamatuLlahi Wabarakatu.
Allah in His infinite mercy has made woman a very respectable and highly sensitive human, and because of these attributes, He has enjoin on them (women) to dress modestly so as to retain the respect accorded to them.
Allah says:
Surah Al-Ahzab, Verse 59:
O Prophet! say to your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers that they let down upon them their over-garments; this will be more proper, that they may be known, and thus they will not be given trouble; and Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
In another verse, Allah says:..
Surah An-Noor, Verse 31:
And say to the believing women that they cast down their looks and guard their private parts and do not display their ornaments except what appears thereof, and let them wear their head-coverings over their bosoms, and not display their ornaments except to their husbands or their fathers, or the fathers of their husbands, or their sons, or the sons of their husbands, or their brothers, or their brothers’ sons, or their sisters’ sons, or their women, or those whom their right hands possess, or the male servants not having need (of women), or the children who have not attained knowledge of what is hidden of women; and let them not strike their feet so that what they hide of their ornaments may be known; and turn to Allah all of you, O believers! so that you may be successful.

In a Hadeeth reported of the Prophet Muhammad [pbuh]:
“When a girl reaches the menstrual age, it is not proper that anything should remain exposed except this and this. He pointed to the face and hands.” Reported by Abu Dahud.
From the above verses of the Qur’an and the hadeeth of the noble prophet of Allah [pbuh], it is quite obvious that a woman or lady must satisfy the following conditions when dressing publicly:
  • The hijab (covering) must conceal the entire body except the face and the hands. The basic objective of hijab (covering) is to communicate modesty. A dress shouldn’t communicate lust.
  • It should not be translucent or tight. Tight clothes, even if they conceal the colour of the skin, still describe the size and shape of the body or part of it, and create vivid images.
  • It should not attract the attention of the opposite gender; thus it should not be extravagant or excessively opulent. Nor should jewellery and makeup be on display.

  • It should not be a garment worn because of vanity or to gain popularity or fame. The female companions were known to wear black and other dark colours but other colours are permissible; a woman must not however wear colourful clothes because of vanity.
  • It should not be perfumed. This prohibition applies to both the body and the clothes.

  • It should not resemble the clothing worn by men.
Conclusively, you will agree with me that what we see today is different from what the Qur’an and hadeeth laid emphasis on. Only Muslimah follow the above conditions when considering what to wear and what not to wear.
Responsibilities lie on parents, husbands and brothers as well the woman herself to obey Allah regarding her dressing.
May Allah be pleased with us all [ameen].
