Our sisters are righteous! Some of them are so pious that despite being full-time house wives (working from home or not working at all) hardly spend a significant time on spirituality as they so do on the phone. Yeah, it’s piety, isn’t it?

Ours sisters manage to wake up for Subh. Since they are not obligated to pray in the mosque, their salawāt are done as whimsically willed. Research and reports from husbands and close associates have shown that many are sisters who pray Subh after sunrise. Why? They sleep late because of their addictive use of the phone.

Some are said to always wake up in the middle of the night. Rather than make ablution and pray Qiyāmul-lail, they pick up their phones and continue the social media engagement that made them sleep late. This they do until some minutes before Fajr and they sleep off, only to wake up after sunrise. Isn’t it a shame on a supposed righteous fellow observing Subh at a time salātud-duhā is due?

Some, after Subh, will immediately pick up their phones without a recourse to chanting the morning adhkār for servitude to their Lord and protection against shaytān, yet such deceivers go on social media preaching righteousness, closeness to Allāh etc. Since they don’t do adhkār, how will the consider tilāwah? The last time the Qur’ān was read by them was in Ramadān.

The weekend some are to use to attend sittings of knowledge are usually loaded with house chores that will avail them no time to add to their knowledge of the deen. Some have listened to no lecture in the last one year, not even on their phones. Those phones of theirs are only meant for Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, Twitter, Messenger etc, not lectures. The ones they see on Facebook or download on WhatsApp are inconclusively watched. If it’s a 10-minute video, for instance, they get tired after 2 minutes.

It’s perturbing that of the 24 hours given to us free of charge by Allāh, some of our sisters can hardly boast of a daily 2-hour spiritual exercise from it. Salawāt – they struggle to observe; morning adhkār – zero (those who manage to do it do so inconclusively); tilāwah – zero; lecture – zero; nāfil for each Salāh – zero; evening adhkār – zero etc. Some are even said to observe their Ishā before Subh or don’t do so at all. I could remember one recently asking me about the Islāmic ruling on witr and rak’atal fajr. In the end, she confessed she hardly did the later.

How on earth would sisters who are practically insensitive to their own personal spiritual growth make exemplary mothers to their daughters and sons? How protected would such people be against spiritual attack from man and jinn?

“There truly are signs in the creation of the heavens and earth, and in the alternation of night and day, for those with understanding, who remember God standing, sitting, and lying down, who reflect on the creation of the heavens and earth: ‘Our Lord! You have not created all this without purpose- You are far above that!- so protect us from the torment of the Fire.”
[Surah Aal-E-Imran 190 – 191]
