I came across the video of the President of Dog Lovers in Lagos where she called out Hilda Baci, the chef who tried breaking the Guinness Record of the longest cooking hours, for serving and eating dog meat in a video she uploaded. As the President of Dog Lovers, she could not come to terms with someone killing and eating any of her beloved children as she calls it. There are concerns that Hilda’s actions might have a negative consequence on her being acknowledged by Guinness World Records as the human who cooked for the longest hours in history.
In this video, I discussed animal rights and who sets the standards. The woman criticizing Hilda might love Cow meat whereas Cows are revered by some. What are the grounds to accept eating someone’s gods but antagonize eating an animal you keep as a pet? Dogs, cats, birds, and some other animals are kept as household pets. Reptiles and amphibians, when kept as pets, are kept in special glass enclosures. If Hilda kept Chickens as pets and eats them, is that also bad?
While there is less disagreement about the consequence of accepting that animals have rights, there is much disagreement as to whether they have rights or what we mean by animal rights.
As it turns out, animal rights activists who don’t want animals killed, kept in zoos, and want them to be elevated to human status contradict their own activism because keeping an animal without their consent would be wrong in this context. When you use dogs for security, do you pay them salaries?
I also explained the Islamic context of animal rights and the Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare…
