Back in the days when I was in Madrasah, one of my teachers used to say:

“Debt is a source of anxiety in the night, and disgrace during the day.”

I never really understood what he meant with those words until I tasted the bitter pill of indebtedness. It is a huge burden to bear… The constant fear of disappointment and embarrassment….. It’s simply unbearable.

If you’re in my shoes, here is a prophetic recommendation for overcoming the challenge of debt.

“Try it was what gave birth to the squirrel’s mother.. “

Abu Sa’eed Al-Khudri narrated that:

“Once, the Messenger of Allah (upon him be peace) entered the Mosque and he saw a man from among the Ansaars named Abu Umaamah seated therein. Thereupon he asked him, “O Abu Umaamah, why are you sitting in the Mosque even when it is not yet time for Salaat? He replied, sorrow and debts, O Messenger of Allah. The Prophet said, “Should I not teach you something that will make Allah take away your sorrow and pay your debt? He said, please, do, O Apostle of Allah. The Prophet said, say the following prayer every morning and evening:

“O Allah, I seek protection with Thee from anxiety and difficulty; and I seek Your protection from Thee against inability and laziness; and I seek protection with Thee from cowardice and stinginess; and I seek protection with Thee from huge (and overwhelming) debt and oppression of men.”

The man said, “So I did that, and Allah took away my sorrow and took care of my debts.” aa Allaah! I prostrate before Thy Mighty self this moment, please, take away my sorrows and repay all my debts.
