JESUS DIED FOR THE SINS OF HUMANITY
First and foremost, we must know that the Christians’ belief that Jesus came to die for the sins of humanity is scripturally legless. It has no place in the bible. If someone came to die for the sins of humanity, He must have been sent to the whole of mankind. Let us see those Jesus was sent to.
In the book of Matthew chapter 15 verse 22, We read
“And, behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts, and cried unto him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil”
The reader should bear in mind that we are trying to figure out if Jesus was sent to a particular group of people or to the whole of humanity using his words as a case study.
In verse 23 of the same chapter, we read,
“But he answered her not a word…”
It may interest the reader to know why Jesus didn’t answer her; she meets a similar but harsher reaction from Jesus’ disciples. The continuation of verse 23 reads,
“…And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after us.”
There are three things to note here.
- i) The woman was a Canaanite not an Israelite ii) Jesus didn’t answer her a word
iii) The disciples of Jesus asked him to send her away
In verse 24 of the same chapter, Jesus said,
“… I AM NOT SENT BUT UNTO THE LOST SHEEP OF THE HOUSE OF ISRAEL”
Here Jesus claimed to have been sent to only the Israelites. We may disregard Matthew 15:24 as being true calling it a slip of tongue but Matthew 10:5-6 proves that Jesus was sent to the Israelites and not to mankind. We read,
“5 These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, GO NOT INTO THE WAY OF THE GENTILES, AND INTO ANY CITY OF THE SAMARITANS ENTER YE NOT
6 But GO RATHER TO THE LOST SHEEP OF THE HOUSE OF ISRAEL.
Here we see Jesus asking his disciples not to preach to the gentiles nor go into any city of the Samaritans but to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. we may then ask, “WHY ISRAEL?”. Did Jesus consider the gentiles unworthy of salvation? Was he a racist? Or was he just sent to the people of Israel? I leave the reader to answer these questions.
THE ORIGINAL SIN
When you ask a Christian what sin did Jesus came to die for, they tell you he came to save us from the original sin. Let us have a look at the origin of the original sin.
In the book of genesis chapter 2:16-17, We read,
“And the LORD commanded the man (Adam), saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:
“But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die ”
God was commanding Adam in these verses not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Now, In Genesis 3:1-6, the bible talks about how the serpent tempted Eve to eat from the tree of the knowledge of the good and evil who in turn convinced her husband to eat from the tree also.
There is something very interesting that should be noted here. In Genesis 2:17, the bible says God said,
“But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die”
Whereas in Genesis 3:1, the bible says,
“Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?”
The devil was questioning Eve (Adam’s wife) in these verse and she responded in verse 2 of the same chapter, she replied
“And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:
3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.”
Here, Eve was telling the serpent the instruction God gave to Adam that they are permitted to eat from the fruit of the garden except the one in the midst of the garden which is the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. When the devil heard this, He disproved what God told Adam and Eve and he said to Eve in verse 4 and 5
“4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:
5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.”
So, we have God and the serpent saying different things. God told Adam in Genesis 2:17 that he would SURELY DIE the day he eats from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil while the serpent said to Eve in Genesis 3:4-5 that she and her husband would not die as said by God and the serpent went on to tell Eve that in the day they eat from the tree, their eyes would be opened and they shall be able as gods knowing good and evil.
Eve was convinced by the serpent and she ate from the fruit
of the tree and also convinced Adam to eat of it. Let us now look at who was truthful to Adam and Eve. God told Adam that he would surely die the day he eats the fruit of the tree while the serpent said to Eve that they would not die but their eyes would be opened and they would have knowledge of good and bad. What happened after they ate from the tree?
Genesis 3:6-7 says,
“And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.”
“And the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig trees leaves together, and made themselves aprons.”
We can read what happened to them after they ate the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. They did not die rather their eyes were opened (becoming wise) therefore confirming what the devil told Eve in Genesis 3:5 that “…THEN YOUR EYES SHALL BE OPENED”. So, do we conclude that God lied to Adam according to the bible? It is for the reader to ponder on.
However, A Christian may argue that God’s intention for Adam was to live forever prior to the eating of the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil, Hence when God said Adam would die the day he eats from the tree, it doesn’t mean they would die instantly that die but that Adam and his descendants would live for a while and die. This argument can easily be refuted using Genesis 3:22.Let us read,
“And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he out forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever”
This occurred after Adam and Eve ate the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and bad. We can read how God was trying to prevent Adam to eat of the tree of life so he would not be able to become immortal. Therefore, we can conclude that Adam was not immortal before and after he ate the fruit.
We may even ask why God was scared of Adam eating from the tree of life?. If he eats and becomes immortal, can’t God render him to become mortal? Genesis3:22 even suggests that God and angels became immortals and had knowledge of good and evil by eating the fruits of both the tree of the knowledge of good and evil and tree of life.
