Ramallah, occupied West Bank – A sixth Palestinian has tragically lost his life as a result of the Israeli military’s extensive raid on the city of Jenin in the northern occupied West Bank. The raid, which occurred on Monday, resulted in the deaths of five Palestinians, including one minor, and left over 90 others injured.
Amjad Aref al-Jaas, aged 48, succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday morning. He had been shot in the stomach during the military operation, as confirmed by the Palestinian health ministry.
It is worth noting that Amjad’s son, 22-year-old Waseem, was among the ten Palestinians killed during the Jenin refugee camp massacre earlier this year on January 25.
In a separate incident on Monday night, Israeli forces fatally shot Zakariya al-Zaaloul, a 20-year-old Palestinian male, in the village of Husan near Bethlehem in the southern occupied West Bank. This brings the total number of Palestinian fatalities since Monday to seven.
A funeral procession was held on Tuesday morning for al-Zaaloul, starting at the Beit Jala public hospital and culminating in his burial in Husan.
Intensive Raid on Refugee Camp The Israeli soldiers launched a massive operation early on Monday, storming the Jenin refugee camp and employing live ammunition, stun grenades, and toxic gas, according to the Wafa news agency. Combat helicopters were also utilized, marking the first time in decades that they were deployed during an operation following an hours-long exchange of gunfire between Palestinian fighters and the Israeli army.
The health ministry has identified the victims of Monday’s attack as Ahmed Saqr (15), Ahmed Daraghmeh (19), Khaled Darwish (21), Qassam Sariya (19), and Qassam Faisal Abu Sirriya (29). At least 22 injured Palestinians, including a 15-year-old girl, are reported to be in critical condition.
Israeli forces targeted medical crews in Jenin during the operation, with at least four ambulances being hit by Israeli fire, as reported by Nibal Farsakh, the media and information officer at the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS). The ambulances were directly targeted, resulting in damage to their structure and glass, according to Farsakh.
Medical teams faced initial obstacles in accessing the scene and ultimately arrived late to provide treatment to the injured, some of whom were in critical condition and urgently required medical assistance.
The Israeli military stated that seven of its soldiers were wounded during the attack, with one soldier’s condition deteriorating but stabilizing later. The army described the raid as a “massive exchange of fire.”
Within the camp, the Israeli army arrested Assem Abu al-Haija, a former Palestinian prisoner released from Israeli prisons in January. He is the son of Jamal Abu al-Haija, a leader within the Hamas armed resistance movement who is currently imprisoned.
Since the beginning of 2023, Israeli forces have killed at least 170 Palestinians, including 26 children, according to the Palestinian health ministry. This figure includes 36 Palestinians who lost their lives during a four-day assault on the besieged Gaza Strip between May 9 and 13.
