After I reverted to Islam, many Christians told me that “Allah is a moon god.” To clear my doubt, I researched the matter, and Alhamdulillah, I found the truth.

This article refutes that false claim with clear evidence from the Qur’an and authentic Islamic sources.

The False Claim

One of the most common arguments thrown against Muslims is that we worship a moon god.

This claim is very strange because:

There is not a single Islamic source (Qur’an, Hadith, Tafsir, etc.) that says Muslims should worship the moon.

There is no evidence that even the earliest Muslims in Mecca ever worshipped the moon.

Therefore, the burden of proof lies on those who make this claim. If anyone asserts that the God of Islam is a moon god, then they must provide evidence from Islamic sources, not assumptions, personal opinions, or silence.

The Qur’an’s Clear Command

Even though the burden of proof is not on me, I will still show from the Qur’an itself that Allah is not a moon god.

The Qur’an explicitly commands Muslims not to worship the moon:

Surah Fussilat 41:37
“Among His Signs are the Night and the Day, and the Sun and the Moon. Do not prostrate to the sun or the moon, but prostrate to Allah, Who created them, if it is Him you truly worship.” (Yusuf Ali translation)

This verse alone completely destroys the false claim.
How can Muslims be worshipping a “moon god” when the Qur’an tells us not to worship the moon?

Tafsir Ibn Kathir on 41:37

Ibn Kathir explains that Allah reminds His creation of His power:

He created the night and day that alternate continuously.

He created the sun with its light and the moon with its reflected light.

He gave them their orbits and stages so mankind could measure time, months, years, acts of worship, and transactions.

Since the sun and moon are among the most beautiful heavenly bodies, some people might be tempted to worship them. But Allah clearly commands:

“Do not prostrate yourselves to the sun nor to the moon, but prostrate yourselves to Allah Who created them.”

This shows that both the sun and moon are mere creations, fully under Allah’s control. Worshipping them is shirk (associating partners with Allah)—the gravest sin in Islam.

Conclusion

It is crystal clear that:

The moon is a creation of Allah, not Allah Himself.

The Qur’an explicitly forbids worshipping the moon.

The claim that Muslims worship a “moon god” is baseless, ignorant, and false.
