A Public Decision That Captured Attention
A popular bar in Gbagada Estate Phase 1, Lagos, has announced it is shutting down after its owner revealed that he had made a promise to Almighty God to one day leave the alcohol business.
The announcement, displayed on a notice at the entrance of Wise Ken Bar & Lounge, has attracted widespread attention because of the reason given for the closure.
The notice states:
“I made a promise to Almighty God that at some point in my life, I shall quit the sale and business of Alcohol, and the time is now.”
It further explains that the establishment will wind down its operations by 30 September 2025 as management transitions into other business ventures.
Unlike many business closures that result from economic challenges or policy changes, this decision was publicly attributed to a personal commitment made to God.
A Powerful Reminder About Guidance
For Muslims, stories like this remind us that guidance is among the greatest blessings Allah bestows upon His servants.
Allah says:
﴿إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَهْدِي مَن يَشَاءُ إِلَىٰ صِرَاطٍ مُّسْتَقِيمٍ﴾
“Indeed, Allah guides whom He wills to the Straight Path.”
(Surah An-Nūr 24:46)
No one knows when Allah will open a person’s heart.
Many people spend years in occupations or lifestyles they later abandon after sincerely reflecting on their relationship with their Creator.
Leaving Something for the Sake of Allah
Islam teaches believers to earn through lawful means and to stay away from what Allah has prohibited.
Alcohol occupies a unique place in Islamic teachings because of the harm it causes to individuals, families, and society. Consequently, Islam prohibits not only consuming intoxicants but also participating in their production and sale.
Walking away from a long-established business is rarely easy.
Such a decision often involves financial sacrifice, uncertainty, and beginning life anew.
Yet the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave glad tidings to those who abandon something for Allah’s sake:
“Whoever leaves something for the sake of Allah, Allah will replace it with something better.”
(Reported in Musnad Ahmad and authenticated by a number of scholars.)
This promise continues to inspire believers to exchange unlawful earnings for lawful provision.
The Door of Repentance Remains Open
One of the greatest messages of Islam is hope.
Allah says:
“Say, ‘O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful.'”
(Surah Az-Zumar 39:53)
Many people intend to repent “one day.”
But no one is guaranteed tomorrow.
Every passing day is an opportunity to return to Allah before it is too late.
This story serves as a timely reminder that repentance should never be delayed.
A Lesson Beyond One Business
Whether Muslim or non-Muslim, every person reaches moments in life when they must choose between worldly gain and what they believe is right before God.
This announcement is therefore about more than the closure of a business.
It reminds us that guidance can arrive at any stage of life and that sincere change is always possible while the door of repentance remains open.
As Muslims, we pray for everyone striving to leave behind what displeases Allah and to pursue what earns His pleasure.
