Thousands of narration and we’ll keep on reading and telling each ourselves about the companions and how well they guarded the Qur’an and their affairs were guided by the Qur’an as well. Those who came after them sought their path as well and they became pleased through their relation with the Qur’an.
What is the situation of the Islamic Ummah today? How well do we give regards to the Qur’an? To the eyes reading this, how well do you know the Qur’an and take cognisance of its verses and virtues? We now refer less to the Qur’an and make it secondary. We choose to do away with the Divine words therein by disobeying the commands of Allah and involving ourselves in His prohibitions. Our Madaaris (Islamic Schools) are not filled as they should be, only few people dedicate their life to committing the Qur’an to memory, only few people read the Qur’an and ruminate on its meaning. Majority read it just for the sake of reading it.
Nowadays, Muslims are immersed in sadness, anxiety, depression and a whole lot of challenges, yet, they never see the Qur’an as their source of comfort. They seek comfort in Music and other profanities. Our beloved Prophet has warned against this, he clearly stated that the Qur’an is our remedy, our source of joy, our path to success and to paradise.
It was narrated by Abu Musa Al-‘Ash’ari that the Prophet (Peace be upon him) said:
_”The example of him (a believer) who recites the Qur’an is like that of a citron which tastes good and smells good. And he (a believer) who does not recite the Qur’an is like a date which is good in taste but has no smell. And the example of a dissolute wicked person who recites the Qur’an is like the Raihana (sweet basil) which smells good but tastes bitter. And the example of a dissolute wicked person who does not recite the Qur’an is like the colocynth which tastes bitter and has no smell._ (Sahih al-Bukhari 5020)
In another narration, Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-‘As reported that:
_The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: One who was devoted to the Qur’an will be told to recite, ascend and recite carefully as he recited carefully when he was in the world, for he will reach his abode when he comes to the last verse he recites._ (Sunan Abi Dawud 1464)
We would go on and on and will not exhaust the great blessings which await the one who takes joy in reciting, learning or teaching the Qur’an. As Muslims, we must keep it in mind that the worldly life is but a play-time and what really counts is how much we strive to please our creator. One of the best ways to please Allah is through reciting the Qur’an, learning or teaching it, and of course reflecting and acting upon the wordings therein, for they are words that will pilot one to the greatest and most pleasant abode in Paradise.
Remember the words of Allah:
إِنَّ هَٰذَا الْقُرْآنَ يَهْدِي لِلَّتِي هِيَ أَقْوَمُ وَيُبَشِّرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ الَّذِينَ يَعْمَلُونَ الصَّالِحَاتِ أَنَّ لَهُمْ أَجْرًا كَبِيرًا
_Indeed, this Qur’an guides to that which is most suitable and gives good tidings to the believers who do righteous deeds that they will have a great reward._
-Sura Al-Isra’, Ayah 9
We beseech Allah to bestow His blessings upon us and make us the custodians of the Qur’an, for He is above all powerful and willing.
