The Christian Association of Nigeria, Lagos State, has defended the sacking of the Presiding Chaplain of the Chapel of Christ the Light, Alausa, Venerable Femi Taiwo.
The CAN Chairman, Apostle Alexander Bamgbola, said Taiwo was hired by the Governing Council of the chapel, adding that the body also reserved the rights to sack him.
Bamgbola said although the Christian body was investigating the incident, it believed the decision was in order.
However, there was drama while journalists at the briefing were asking questions from the CAN leaders.
A journalist asked the CAN Chairman if Taiwo was actually asked to vacate his house within 24 hours, which violated his rights under the Lagos Tenancy Law.
The reporter said, “This story would not have been of interest in any way except that the reverend was thrown out of his residence in 24 hours.
“Many people consider that to be inhuman and unjust. As leaders of the church where he belongs, do you know exactly what happened? Was he thrown out of his residence? Was he given due notice to leave? What exactly happened?”
Bamgbola, in his response, said, “Thank you for your question. While all of us here have been talking, we have emphasised something: The matter is under control. The church and the government are handling it. Okay? That is the answer to your question.”
The leader of the African Church, Ifako Diocese, Rt. Rev. Michael Adeyemi, Taiwo’s bishop who had granted an exclusive interview to The PUNCH on the incident, was in attendance at the briefing.
When Adeyemi was asked if he still stood by the interview, Bamgbola hijacked the question.
