All praise belongs to Allāh, Ar-Raḥmān, whose mercy is far greater than our deeds and whose generosity…
All praise belongs to Allāh, Ar-Raḥmān, whose mercy is far greater than our deeds and whose generosity reaches His servants in ways they could never earn on their own. May peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ, who guided us to the nights that carry treasures greater than a lifetime.
Among the greatest gifts Allāh has placed within Ramadan is a night unlike any other.
A night hidden within the last ten nights.
A night whose worth cannot be measured by ordinary time.
Laylatul Qadr.
The Night of Decree.
A night in which destinies are written, mercy descends, and the doors of forgiveness open wider than the servant could ever imagine.
For the believer, it is a night filled with hope.
Because perhaps in that one night, what felt heavy for years may be lifted.
What felt distant may suddenly become near.
And what seemed impossible may quietly be written by Allāh.
A Night Greater Than a Lifetime
Allāh Himself describes the greatness of this night in the Qur’an:
لَيْلَةُ الْقَدْرِ خَيْرٌ مِنْ أَلْفِ شَهْرٍ
“The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months.”
(Qur’an 97:3)
More than a thousand months.
More than eighty years.
A single night of sincere worship in Laylatul Qadr can outweigh an entire lifetime.
SubḥānAllāh.
It is as though Allāh, in His immense mercy, has gifted this ummah an opportunity that stretches far beyond the limits of our short lives.
A prayer whispered in that night.
A moment of sincere repentance.
A heart that turns back to Allāh with humility.
All of it may be written in the sight of Allāh as greater than decades of worship.
How generous is Ar-Raḥmān with His servants.
A Night Filled With Peace
Allāh also describes the serenity of this night:
سَلَامٌ هِيَ حَتَّىٰ مَطْلَعِ الْفَجْرِ
“Peace it is until the break of dawn.”
(Qur’an 97:5)
There is a tranquility that descends upon this night.
Angels fill the earth.
Mercy spreads quietly.
And hearts that turn sincerely to Allāh often feel a calm that is difficult to describe.
A stillness.
A softness.
A sense that the servant is closer to their Lord than they have been before.
It is a night where even the smallest act done sincerely carries immense weight.
Seeking It With Hope
The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ encouraged the believers to seek Laylatul Qadr within the last ten nights of Ramadan.
He ﷺ said:
“Whoever stands in prayer during Laylatul Qadr with faith and seeking reward, all of his previous sins will be forgiven.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim)
What an immense promise.
A night that may erase the weight of years.
A night that may turn a page in the life of a believer.
And so the servant approaches these nights with hope.
Perhaps this will be the night.
Perhaps tonight’s duʿā’ will be the one that Allāh accepts.
Perhaps tonight will be the moment forgiveness is written.
No sincere effort made for Allāh is ever lost.
A Night for Duʿā’
Among the most beloved acts during these nights is duʿā’.
ʿĀ’ishah (raḍiyAllāhu ʿanhā) once asked the Prophet ﷺ:
“If I know which night is Laylatul Qadr, what should I say in it?”
He ﷺ replied:
اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ تُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي
“Allāhumma innaka ʿafuwwun tuḥibbul ʿafwa faʿfu ʿannī.”
“O Allāh, You are Most Forgiving and You love to forgive, so forgive me.”
(Sunan al-Tirmidhī)
It is a short duʿā’.
Yet within it lies the essence of what the servant needs most.
Forgiveness.
Mercy.
A fresh beginning with Allāh.
And perhaps these nights are an opportunity to ask for everything the heart carries.
Nothing is too small for Allāh to hear.
Nothing is too great for Him to grant.
A Gift From Ar-Raḥmān
Laylatul Qadr is one of the most beautiful signs of Allāh’s mercy toward this ummah.
The lifespans of previous nations were long.
But the lifespan of this ummah is shorter.
So Allāh placed within Ramadan a night that multiplies deeds beyond imagination.
A night in which a believer may gain the reward of a lifetime.
A night that reminds us that the mercy of Ar-Raḥmān is always greater than our shortcomings.
Allāh does not look for perfect servants.
He welcomes hearts that return to Him.
Even if they return late.
Even if they return broken.
Even if they return after many mistakes.
A Duʿā’ for Laylatul Qadr
Yā Allāh,
Allow us to witness Laylatul Qadr.
Allow our hearts to recognize its beauty.
Accept our prayers, our duʿā’, and our repentance during these nights.
Forgive our sins, the ones we remember and the ones we have forgotten.
Write us among those who stand in prayer during this blessed night and are forgiven completely.
Yā Ar-Raḥmān, let these nights transform our hearts and draw us closer to You than we have ever been before.
Āmīn.
Some nights pass quietly.
But one of these nights may carry the reward of a lifetime.
And the believer stands before them with hope.
