Do you remember the first time that you learned something cool as a child? You probably couldn’t wait to tell everyone in the house, and even tell your classmates at school. Or maybe it was when you memorized your first Surah of the Quran. I remember reciting that everywhere in the house so that I will not forget.
There is something about learning and understanding something for the first time. For many people, they can’t wait to share this new knowledge. This attitude of eagerly teaching what you know is especially good when you are learning the Quran, for some important reasons that I share below:
1). Teaching the Quran is Rewarding
Teachers get paid to teach students, tutors get paid to teach us new skills, but when you teach the Quran to another person, you get rewards that are more precious than any currency of this world.
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “The best among you (Muslims) are those who learn the Qur’an and teach it.” (Bukhari)
Teaching the Quran is a way of getting a lot of rewards. As a teacher of knowledge, you are the reason that another person understands the words of Allah (ta’ala) and if He wills, you get a reward for sharing your knowledge of the Quran with other people.
2). Teaching Improves Your Knowledge
Imagine that your full-time job is being a teacher of the Quran. This means that before a class, you at least need to plan your lesson notes and reread whatever portions of the Quran that you would be teaching your class.
Every time we teach the Quran regardless of the type of audience, it helps us improve our own knowledge too, especially through the way we must have prepared for the teaching session.
This is one of the benefits of teaching what you know of the Quran. As you read more to be able to teach better, you undoubtedly learn more yourself.
3). Teaching Reinforces What You Know
Sometimes, it may not be about new knowledge, sometimes it is about us reinforcing what we already know. Imagine that you have memorized a chapter of the Quran and you are teaching it to your children. The more you teach them, the more you read it repeatedly to yourself, helping you to revise what you have learned.
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Keep on reciting the Qur’an, for, by Him in Whose Hand my life is, Qur’an runs away (is forgotten) faster than camels that are released from their tying ropes.” (Bukhari)
This is the reason why you see “Da’ees” (people who call to Islam) and you are amazed and inspired by how much of the Quran and Hadith they can call recall from memory. They may have memorized these words like you and me, but because they spend their days and nights teaching people about Islam, they continue to read and recite and this helps them retain what they know.
4). Teaching the Quran Helps You to Stay Consistent
In our journey as custodians of the Quran, there is one thing that we must learn, and that is that consistency is one of the keys to understanding the Quran. Whether you are memorizing the Arabic words of the Quran or reading the English tafsir, consistency is what helps us improve our knowledge.
Consistency also comes into play when we make it a duty to then pass on our knowledge of the Quran to others, as we find ourselves becoming consistent in reading and learning more about the Quran.
5). Teaching Exposes Us to Different Perspectives
Some of the greatest debates about issues in Islam happened between teachers and their students. Because of some of these debates, especially among generations before us, the rest of us have come to know more about Islam. We have come to have different schools of thought that gives us a clearer understanding of the deen.
A good benefit that we get from teaching the Quran comes from how it exposes our understanding of the Quran, to other people. Maybe they understand an issue in a way different from ours and we can learn from them, or maybe their understanding can show us what is wrong with ours and vice versa.
