The greeting of peace is the teslim of Muslims, that we express to spread peaceful existence and security among other Muslims and as an endearment to other believers to emulate this golden greeting. This is a sign of ethics and good lifestyle.

Many a time if it happened that another Muslim made a teslim (Islamic Greeting) to me and I didn’t respond to such person in a better way or at least in adequate; I felt I have committed an offense against the Muslim. I usually recommend that, the fellow Muslim should feel free to charge me for guilty on the offence committed, so I can pay the debt in full and be free from any liability (in record) in future to come.

It is not recommended to short cut the teslim nor to make it in an abbreviated form, because this amount to nothing categorically. That is why I make sure I render my greeting in correct form and mostly in full, and also do the same while responding to others teslim; It is better to go for the big ticket. The teslim offering and the adequate response to it is a recommendation and also an obligation of Allah to all Muslims. The teslim should be carefully rendered, to spread peaceful security around the world:

وَإِذَا حُيِّيتُم بِتَحِيَّةٍ فَحَيُّوا بِأَحْسَنَ مِنْهَا أَوْ رُدُّوهَا إِنَّ اللَّهَ كَانَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ حَسِيبًا

“When a (courteous) greeting is offered you, meet it with a greeting still more courteous, or (at least) of equal courtesy. Allah takes careful account of all things.” [Qur’ān 4; Surah An-Nisa, Verse 86]

…meet it with a greeting still more courteous, or (at least) of equal courtesy.” Divine courtesy demands that one respond in a better way, if not that one should return the greeting as the person has offered it to us. This is to save us from the query of Allah, for He takes account for all our act: “Allah takes careful account of all things.”

As-Salāmun Alaykum Wa-RahmatuLlahi Wa-Barakatuh!
The proper teslim is the full code of Introduction,
The common and divinely greeting of Recommendation
From our Lord of the Most-High in Exhortation;
Responding to it is an act of worship and also an Obligation.
Render it well and don’t abuse it in any short-cut Formation.
As we won’t want our rewards to be short in form of Reduction
Neither do we want our heedlessness to meet Allah’s Retribution
Nor the enjoyment to be cut short, at our end Destination.

It was narrated that ‘Abdullah bin Salam said “When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came to Al-Madinah, the people rushed towards him and it was said: ‘The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) has come!’ I came along with the people to see him, and when I looked at the face of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), I realized that his face was not the face of a liar. The first thing he said was:
“O people, spread (the greeting of) Salam, offer food to people and pray at night when people are sleeping, you will enter Paradise in peace.” [Ibn Majah (Establishing the Prayer and the Sunnah Regarding Them – 544)]

Thus, greeting with ‘As-Salāmun Alaykum Wa-RahmatuLlahi Wa-Barakatuhv (short accepted form; Salam Alaykum) is one of the means that will make us enter Jannah (Paradise). The teslim is one of the most important connection between Muslims, as it serves as the key of welcoming fellow Muslims and as a means of spreading peace and tranquility among the Ummah of Muhammad (ﷺ).

We should make sure we make our teslim in the proper way, and not also abuse it in short form when we are greeted with the proper and complete teslim; as Allah takes account of all things. Doing this will not cost us any money or stress. This is just a bonus reward at our doorstep, alas, many of us neglect and find it difficult to grab our own free portion. May Allah ease our affairs. Āmīn!
