THE BLACK STONE: A COMPOUND TRUTH FOR THE FAULT SEEKING CRITICS By Sanusi Olawale Ibn Abdulwasiu

If you have ever met a hardened critic of Islam, questions about Ka’aba and the Black Stone (al-Hajr al-Aswad) are among the numerous questions you have been asked.

What is Black Stone? Why Ka’aba? Why do you kiss black stone when circumambulating the Holy Ka’aba? These are among the questions they raise. A Christian who asks these questions has only one objective; just to discredit Islam, and relate it to mere paganism. This piece is aimed at answering the likely questions on the Black Stone, at the same time giving the Christians a taste of their medicine.

So what is the black stone, and Why?

The black stone was a meteorite that was sent down by Allah Almighty to Prophet Abraham and his Son Ishmael (Peace be upon them), to give the precise location of where the Ka’aba was to be built by them. We believe that Prophets Abraham and Ishmael built the Ka’aba. Proving this from the Bible quite simple.

The Black Stone is placed in one of the corners of the Kaaba, and it serves as a starting and ending point for The Circumambulation (tawaaf) times around the Ka’aba.

Those who circumambulate in the immediate place around Ka’aba kiss it while those who cannot make up-to it just wave their hands towards it while there are people who circle the Ka’aba even from the first, second floors as well. They follow the mark parallel to the Black Stone as the start point of the tawaaf. Had there been something too special in this stone itself then it would have been mandatory for each and every pilgrim to physically touch and kiss which is not the case. As its serves as a mark to something important so its just as if a soldier or some other person returns to his homeland after a long time so he kisses the soil of his land or shows admiration for some landmarks. Its his love, his affection for his homeland and nothing more. For itself soil is nothing, same way Black Stone for itself is nothing.

Do Muslims worship the Black Stone?

No, Muslims don’t! The purpose of the Black Stone has been described above. Further there is more historic evidence that its not an object of Worship.

In one of most sad events of Islamic history the city of Makkah was sacked by the Qaramatians in the year 930 C.E. They killed many pilgrims, desecrated the holy sites and took away the Black Stone to their seat of Power at Al-Hasa in Bahrayn. It was restored in the year 952 C.E. thus for about quarter of a century the stone was displaced from its location yet neither did Muslims turn to Al-Hasa for prayers during that period neither were the obligations Of Salah(ritual prayers) and Hajj (obligatory pilgrimage) suspended. If it were an object of worship much consternation would have followed the unfortunate event.

Why Kiss it?

We Muslims kiss it just because of Holy Prophet Muhammad did it.

Narrated `Abis bin Rabi`a:`Umar came near the Black Stone and kissed it and said “No doubt, I know that you are a stone and can neither benefit anyone nor harm anyone. Had I not seen Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) kissing you I would not have kissed you.”

Contrary to the Islamic concept of showing respect to this stone what the Christians do is much more than this. Firstly, making the idols of any holy person and its revering is no way comparable to Muslim’s kissing the shapeless stone which for itself signifies nothing. Secondly, Catholics do pray ‘To Jesus through Mary’ thus believing in her as at least an intercessor. I am saying ‘at least’ because this is something no catholic would ever deny. There were and still are people who openly called Mary, ‘the Mother God’, not merely ‘Mother of God’. And even today there are people still who revere and venerate her as “GOD”. And such people claim to be Catholics . So showing veneration to the statue of Mary (May Allah bestow His blessings upon her) is nothing less than idol worship. No sane Muslims has any such belief about the Black Stone or the Holy Ka’aba.

The United States “The National Aeronautics and Space Administration” (NASA) proved the identity of this stone scientifically.

NASA’S CONFIRMATION:
“Stars” falling from the skies have been known since ancient times; rarely, stones are found that were tied to these”shooting stars”.One such rock has been venerated by Islam (in its encased shrine in Mecca)for more than 1300 years. By the19th Century, meteorites were identified correctly as samples from other parts of the Solar System. They are part of the nearly 500 tons of extraterrestrial rock material that reaches and enters the atmosphere each day. Most of that material is burned up by friction from the high speed of entry but meteoric dust can remain in the air and a very few individual blocks of material survive this passage to fall in the sea or on the ground as meteorites.”

“The second city of Saudi Arabia Is Mecca Which contains the holiest shrine in Islam, a great plaza with a rectangular structure containing a meteorite that is considered to have fallen into the Muslim world directly from Heaven. Devout Muslims perform the Hajj, a pilgrimage to this shrine required at least once in a lifetime. Here it is as seen in a Quickbird image:”

An adage says, “one who lives in a glass house should not throw stones”.
Worshiping stones is part of the Biblical doctrine. Now, let us look at the Bible’s sacred stone.

Genesis 28:18: When Jacob got up early the next morning, he took the rock that he had used for a pillow and stood it up for a place of worship. Then he poured olive oil on the rock to dedicate it to God.

So here we clearly see that the rock that Jacob used for sleeping and resting became a holy object of worship that needed to be anointed by having oil being poured on it. We further read from the Bible about holy stones that God Almighty supposedly forbade the believers from even edging or trimming:

Exodus 20:25: If you ever build an altar for me out of stones, do not use any tools to chisel the stones, because that would make the altar unfit.

Each time christians want to prove a wrong point, it always come back for them. Jacob of the Bible was the first to worship a stone!

Another disturbing issue from the Critics is this hadith.

It was narrated that Sa’eed bin Jubair said: I heard Ibn “Abbas say: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “This Stone will be brought on the Day of Resurrection, and it will be given two eyes with which to see, and a tongue with which to speak, and it will bear witness for those who touched it in sincerity.”

This is a very big headache for christians. How could a stone talk? Jesus even said a stone can cry;

Luke 19:37-40

As he was drawing near—already on the way down the Mount of Olives—the whole multitude of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen, saying, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.” He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.”

From a narration from ibn Umar, Christians find it funny that the Black Stone could be a means for expiation of sins.
Bible disappoint them on this. Yahweh actually forgave sins of a whole land by the virtue of ordinary stone too.

Zechariah 3:9 (New International Version)

See, the stone I have set in front of Joshua! There are seven eyes on that one stone, and I will engrave an inscription on it,’ says the LORD Almighty, ‘and I will remove the sin of this land in a single day.

New Living Translation
Now look at the jewel I have set before Jeshua, a single stone with seven facets. I will engrave an inscription on it, says the LORD of Heaven’s Armies, and I will remove the sins of this land in a single day.

English Standard Version
For behold, on the stone that I have set before Joshua, on a single stone with seven eyes, I will engrave its inscription, declares the LORD of hosts, and I will remove the iniquity of this land in a single day.

Thus is absolutely ridiculous! Yahweh is removing the sins of the whole people of a single land in a single day by the virtue of A STONE THAT HAS SEVEN EYES… That’s serious!

Yahweh’s stone is quite more scary, more idolatry than the black stone at Ka’aba.

Romans 9:33 even proved Yahweh himself lives In a stone… Did I just lied? Let’s find out.

Romans 9:33 (New International Version)

As it is written: “See, I lay in Zion a stone that causes people to stumble and a rock that makes them fall, and the one who believes in him will never be put to shame.”

If Yahweh could forgive sins of a whole land because of an ordinary stone, why should christians belittle the black stone in Ka’aba?

Yahweh’s stone with seven eyes is worse. The stone at Ka’aba is not too important that we cannot do without. The paganism taught by the Bible is outrageous. The stone at Ka’aba was missing for years. It was taken away between 930-952 C.E. and Hajj and Umrah never stopped between these years.

We Muslims don’t worship the Black Stone. No instructions to do so from the Qur’an. But if we look into the Bible, we will find the said Prophets doing the unbelievables.

(1) 1 Samuel 7:12

Then Samuel took a stone, and set it between Mizpeh and Shen, and called the name of it Ebenezer, saying, Hitherto hath the Lord helped us.

(2) Joshua 24:26

And Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God, and took a great stone, and set it up there under an oak, that was by the sanctuary of the Lord.

(3) Joshua 4:20
And those twelve stones, which they took out of Jordan, did Joshua pitch in Gilgal.

The real worship of Stones can be traced to the Bible. Muslims don’t worship the black stone at Makkah.

Idolatry is not part of Islam. Check the Bible.
