DELVING INTO GENESIS CHAPTER 38. By Bashir Habeeb Adeshola.

Deception, pornography and such is also the case as one delves into the exegetical analysis of this passage. a study of Genesis 38 in particular (Judah Onan and Tamar)

The inspiration to weave this piece leap up to my mind after I had a dialogue with a Kenyan Christian apologist on the genealogy of Jesus Christ according to the biblical stories.

This treatise exposed grain of lies buried by pastors, evangelist, bishops and Popes. We read in the Bible that, committing adultery is a sin. It is stated among the laws God revealed to Moses in the book of Exodus, chapter 20, that thou shalt not commit adultery.

And God spake all these words, saying,

Exodus:20:1

Thou shalt not commit adultery.

Exodus:20:14

Unfortunately, Yahweh caused adultery according to the same Bible. Yahweh took the wives of the Israelites and then give them to their neighbors to lie with them. Isn’t this adultery? We read in the second book of Samuel.

Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thine own house, and I will take thy wives before thine eyes, and give them unto thy neighbor, and he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of this sun.

2 Samuel:12:11

I. The writer of Exodus and the book of Samuel must have been inspired by different Holy Spirits?

II. Why would Yahweh go against the law he laid?

III. One of this authors must be lying, either Samuel or the writer of Exodus.

IV.Did Yahweh truly give the wives of the Israelites to their neighbors? If yes, then Yahweh crossed the law in Exodus 20:14. I leave this puzzle for our Christian brethren to solve.

This is just the tip of the iceberg.

Genesis chapter 38 talks about Judah, his wife, his sons, how Yahweh killed his sons and how Judah committed adultery, but the church will never tell you that, Judah through whose lineage Jesus came to the world committed adultery with his son’s wife.

According to the book of Genesis, Judah is the fourth of the twelve sons of Jacob by Leah, and the ancestor of the tribe of Judah. An explanation for his name is given in Genesis 29:35. His tribe eventually formed the Kingdom of Judah in the south of Israel. Judah is the founder of the Israelite “Tribe of Judah”. By extension, he is indirectly eponymous of the Kingdom of Judah, the land of Judea and the word “Jew”. All Jews including Jesus are the descendants of Judah. Judah had five sons according to the Bible. Er, Onan, Shelah, pharez and Zara.

According to the book of Genesis, Judah married a Canaanite woman who bore him three sons ER, ONAN and SHELAH. One may ask, why is the name of Pharez and Zara not mentioned here? We will find answer to this question, let’s continue reading.

1. And it came to pass at that time, that Judah went down from his brethren, and turned in to a certain Adullamite, whose name was Hirah.

Judah married a Canaanite woman who gave birth to three of his sons (ER, ONAN and SHELAH)

2. And Judah saw there a daughter of a certain Canaanite, whose name was Shuah; and he took her, and went in unto her.

SHUAH GAVE BIRTH TO ER.

3 And she conceived, and bare a son; and he called his name Er.

SHUAH GAVE BIRTH TO ONAN, JUDAH’S SECOND CHILD.

4. And she conceived again, and bare a son; and she called his name Onan.

SHUAH GAVE BIRTH TO SHELAH.

5. And she yet again conceived, and bare a son; and called his name Shelah: and he was at Chezib, when she bare him.

In the sixth chapter of Genesis chapter 38, Judah married a wife for Er (his firstborn child) whose name was Tamar. We read

6. And Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, whose name was Tamar.

According to verse 7 of this chapter, Er was reported to have been a wicked man and Yahweh killed him for his wickedness. Yahweh come down hard on Er, Yahweh did not give Er the chance to repent.
We read how Yahweh slew Er. The question is “why would Yahweh slew ER without giving him the chance to repent?

7. And Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD slew him.

Similar information in Genesis 38:7 is found in 1chronicles 2:3

After the death of Er, Judah commanded Er’s brother (Onan) to marry his brother’s wife.

8. And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother’s wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother.

After Onan married Tamar “his brother’s wife” he refused to impregnate her because he knew the child will not be his. We read

9. But since Onan knew that the offspring would not be his, he spilled his semen on the ground whenever he went in to his brother’s wife, so that he would not give offspring to his brother.

There are some problems in the above verse that I will like to dig out.

I. What is the moral in the above verse?

II. How did the writer of this verse knew Onan do split his semen on the ground?

III. Did he go in with Onan to record all that happened?

IV. Can pastors read this verse to the ears of their church members?

What Onan did was exasperating and displeasing in the sight of Yahweh, and Yahweh killed Onan for that, Yahweh find it so easy to kill people without giving them the chance to repent. We read how Yahweh killed hundreds of people in so many places of the Bible (2kings 2:23-24, 1Samuel 15:3, 2chronicles 15:12-13, Jeremiah 48:10). I doubt Yahweh to be a merciful god.

10. And the thing which he did displeased the LORD: wherefore he slew him also.

Shelah Judah’s third child was young when Yahweh killed his brothers (Er and Onan). So Judah told Er’s wife to go back to her father’s house.

11. Then said Judah to Tamar his daughter in law, Remain a widow at thy father’s house, till Shelah my son be grown: for he said, Lest peradventure he die also, as his brethren did. And Tamar went and dwelt in her father’s house.

JUDAH LOST HIS WIFE

12. And in process of time the daughter of Shuah Judah’s wife died; and Judah was comforted, and went up unto his sheepshearers to Timnath, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.

When Shelah become a grown up man, Judah did not give Tamar to Shelah. Tamar (Er’s wife) heard that her father in-law was going to Timnath, so she sat by the road and pretended to be an harlot.

13. And it was told Tamar, saying, Behold thy father in law goeth up to Timnath to shear his sheep.

14 And she put her widow’s garments off from her, and covered her with a vail, and wrapped herself, and sat in an open place, which is by the way to Timnath; for she saw that Shelah was grown, and she was not given unto him to wife.

Judah who was an Old-Strumpet thought she was a prostitute and he went in with her. This shows Judah was an adulterous man. But was Judah truly an adulterous man? If yes then the Bible is right and Jesus Christ is from adulterous generation. And if no, then the author of Genesis foisted lies on Judah.

15. When Judah saw her, he thought her to be an harlot; because she had covered her face.

16. And he turned unto her by the way, and said, Go to, I pray thee, let me come in unto thee; (for he knew not that she was his daughter in law.) And she said, What wilt thou give me, that thou mayest come in unto me?

17. And he said, I will send thee a kid from the flock. And she said, Wilt thou give me a pledge, till thou send it?

JUDAH IMPREGNATED HIS SON’S WIFE.

18. And he said, What pledge shall I give thee? And she said, Thy signet, and thy bracelets, and thy staff that is in thine hand. And he gave it her, and came in unto her, and she conceived by him.

19. And she arose, and went away, and laid by her vail from her, and put on the garments of her widowhood.

20. And Judah sent the kid by the hand of his friend the Adullamite, to receive his pledge from the woman’s hand: but he found her not.

21. Then he asked the men of that place, saying, Where is the harlot, that was openly by the way side? And they said, There was no harlot in this place.

22. And he returned to Judah, and said, I cannot find her; and also the men of the place said, that there was no harlot in this place.

23. And Judah said, Let her take it to her, lest we be shamed: behold, I sent this kid, and thou hast not found her.

24. And it came to pass about three months after, that it was told Judah, saying, Tamar thy daughter in law hath played the harlot; and also, behold, she is with child by whoredom. And Judah said, Bring her forth, and let her be burnt.

25. When she was brought forth, she sent to her father in law, saying, By the man, whose these are, am I with child: and she said, Discern, I pray thee, whose are these, the signet, and bracelets, and staff.

26. And Judah acknowledged them, and said, She hath been more righteous than I; because that I gave her not to Shelah my son. And he knew her again no more.

TAMAR BECAME PREGNANT AND GAVE BIRTH TO TWO ILLEGITIMATE SONS (PHAREZ AND ZARAH) .

27. And it came to pass in the time of her travail, that, behold, twins were in her womb.

28. And it came to pass, when she travailed, that the one put out his hand: and the midwife took and bound upon his hand a scarlet thread, saying, This came out first.

29. And it came to pass, as he drew back his hand, that, behold, his brother came out: and she said, How hast thou broken forth? this breach be upon thee: therefore his name was called Pharez.

30. And afterward came out his brother, that had the scarlet thread upon his hand: and his name was called Zarah.

Genesis 38:1-30

Pharez the illegitimate son of Judah, Genealogically he happen to be the ninth forefather of the Prophet David 1chronicles 2:4-16

According to the gospel of St Mathew, chapter 1:1. Genealogically David is a father to Jesus Christ. That is, Jesus is from the lineage of David. Pharez is the ninth forefather of David which means Jesus is from Adulterous generation.

I as a Muslim, I do not believe Prophet Isah “Jesus” to be a man from adulterous generation. We believe him to be a prophet, Messenger and servant of Allah (Quran 19:30). We believe him to be a prophet sent to the Israelites during his time (Quran 43:59, Quran 10:47).

May Allah guide the lost souls. Aameen.
