Who is Saudi Arabia's new crown prince?

0

Newly crowned prince is known to be pragmatic on domestic issues and keen on aggressively countering influence of Iran.

Mohammed bin Salman is also the kingdom’s deputy prime minister [AP]

The youngest defence minister in the world, and the first in line to the throne, 32-year-old Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud is also the kingdom’s deputy prime minister.

Early life:

Mohammed bin Salman was born on August 31, 1985. His mother, Princess Fahda bint Falah bin Sultan bin Hathleen, is from the Ajman tribe, whose leader is the princess’ father, Rakan bin Hathleen.

In 2008, Mohammed bin Salman married Princess Sarah bint Mashhoor bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and together they had three children.

He received his primary education in Riyadh, the country’s capital, where he was ranked among the kingdom’s top 10 students.

He obtained a Law degree from King Saud University, where he graduated second in his class. Throughout his time as a university student, Mohammed bin Salman was enrolled in various training programmes.

Professional life:

Following graduation, Mohammed bin Salman established a number of firms before he became involved in governmental work. He served as secretary-general of the Riyadh Competitive Council, special adviser to the chairman of the board for the King Abdulaziz Foundation, and a member of the board of trustees for the Albir society for development.

As part of his philanthropic work, Mohammed bin Salman also established the MiSK Foundation, a non-profit organisation that works on cultivating learning and leadership in Saudi’s youth, and develops startups in the country through various business incubation programmes.

In 2013, he was awarded the “Personality of the Year” award by Forbes Middle East for his role as chairman of the King Salman Youth Center, also known as the MiSK Foundation, in recognition of his support for Saudi’s youth and their development.

Politics:

Mohammed bin Salman embarked on his political journey when he served as full-time adviser to the council of ministers for two years in 2007. In 2009, he became special adviser to his father, who was governor of Riyadh at the time, and continued to serve the experts commission of the Saudi cabinet as a part-time consultant until March 2013.

Mohammed bin Salman was appointed defence minister on January 23, 2015, following his father’s accession to the throne. In the same year, he was named deputy crown prince. Mohammed bin Salman’s most notable move as defence minister was leading Operation Decisive Storm, a Saudi-led coalition in Yemen, which was launched two months after his appointment. The operation consists of eight Sunni-Muslim Arab countries that are fighting Iranian-allied Houthi rebels in Yemen.

The new crown prince is also said to be driving a far more aggressive foreign policy to counter the influence of arch-rival Iran.

Prior to his most recent appointments, Mohammed bin Salman spent a number of years as his father’s personal aide. He was previously president of his father’s Royal Court, back when King Salman was crown prince, where he began introducing his own changes.

In addition to his existing roles, Mohammed bin Salman also heads the Council for Economic Affairs and Development, which oversees the kingdom’s economic affairs, ultimately shaping its political and security policies.

Views:

In April 2016, he introduced Vision 2030, Saudi Arabia’s vision of the future, which is aimed at making the kingdom the heart of the Arab and Islamic world, the investment powerhouse and the hub that connects three continents.

The reformative initiative seeks to diversify and privatise the economy, and to make it less reliant on oil. By 2030, the initiative aims to establish an e-government system.

Mohammed bin Salman has called for more entertainment options in the kingdom for both families and youth. The cabinet passed regulation to lessen the power of the religious police, and an entertainment authority was established in May 2016.

In his attempt to override tradition, Mohammed bin Salman also engaged younger Saudi Muslim scholars who are active on social media and better known among the Saudi youth, as opposed to the kingdom’s council of senior scholars, who set official religious policy and often release religious opinions.

Grand al-Nuri Mosque in Iraq's Mosul 'blown up' by ISIL

The landmark Grand al-Nuri Mosque of Mosul and its leaning minaret have been blown up, with the Iraqi army blaming ISIL for its destruction and the armed group accusing a US-led coalition air raid.

In recent days Iraqi forces have pushed deeper into the last remaining areas held by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) group in Iraq’s second-largest city.

“Our forces were advancing toward their targets deep in the Old City and when they got to within 50 metres of the Nuri mosque, Daesh committed another historical crime by blowing up the Nuri mosque,” Staff Lieutenant General Abdulamir Yarallah, the overall commander of the Mosul offensive, said in a statement late Wednesday.

In a statement on its Amaq website, ISIL blamed US aircraft for destroying the mosque.

The US military denied the allegation. “We did not strike in that area,” coalition spokesman US Air Force Colonel John Dorrian told Reuters news agency by phone.

The Grand al-Nuri Mosque was where ISIL’s leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi made a rare appearance in June 2014 and gave a speech while standing at a pulpit to proclaim the creation of a “caliphate”.

US Army Major-General Joseph Martin said the mosque destruction showed ISIL’s brutality.

“The responsibility of this devastation is laid firmly at the doorstep of ISIS,” said Martin in a statement.

“This is a crime against the people of Mosul and all of Iraq, and is an example of why this brutal organisation must be annihilated.”

Iraqis lovingly call the minaret Al-Hadba, or “the hunchback”. The mosque is named after Nuruddin al-Zanki, a noble who fought the early crusaders from a fiefdom that covered territory in modern-day Turkey, Syria and Iraq. The mosque was built in 1172-73, shortly before his death, and housed an Islamic school.

Iraq‘s Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi denounced the destruction, saying it was a “declaration of defeat” by ISIL.

Al Jazeera’s Bernard Smith, reporting from Erbil, said Iraqis were expressing their anger and outrage over the bombing on social media.

“This is one of Iraq’s most important, historical symbols. Enormous anger here,” Smith said.

Battle for Mosul

Iraqi forces earlier on Wednesday said they had started a push towards the mosque. A US-led coalition is providing air and ground support to the Mosul offensive which began in October 2016.

The forces had encircled on Tuesday the armed group’s stronghold in the Old City, the last district under their control in Mosul.

Iraqi officials had privately expressed the hope that the mosque could be captured early next week in time for Eid al-Fitr, the festival marking the end of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.

The fall of Mosul would, in effect, mark the end of the Iraqi half of the “caliphate”, even though ISIL would continue to control territory west and south of the city, the largest they had control of in both Iraq and Syria.

Baghdadi has left the fighting in Mosul to local commanders and is believed to be hiding in the border area between Iraq and Syria, according to US and Iraqi military sources.

"Hate crime" motive probed in Muslim teen's murder

Brutal baseball bat attack on 17-year-girl may be related to religion, supporters say, after her memorial is set ablaze.

A memorial in downtown Washington, DC, set up for Nabra Hassanen, the 17-year-old girl murdered on Sunday [Creede Newton/Al Jazeera]

Washington, DC – A memorial to Nabra Hassanen, the 17-year-old girl bludgeoned to death after leaving her mosque in Virginia, was set on fire early Wednesday, further increasing speculation that her death was a hate crime.

Police arrested Jonathon Soloman, 24, of South Carolina and charged him with vandalism. Police spokeswoman Sergeant Anna Rose told Al Jazeera via email “the memorial did not appear to be specifically targeted”.

However, the attacks on Hassanen and her memorial have caused some to suspect bigotry was a factor. Police currently attribute the killing to a case of “road rage”.

According to police reports, the 17-year-old was with a group of her friends after prayers Sunday morning when they had an altercation with Darwin Martinez Torres, 22. He is accused of bludgeoning Hassanen with a baseball bat and disposing of her body in a pond.

Abas Sherif, a spokesman for the Hassenen family, told local media that Nabra and the other girls in her group were wearing the hijab – a headscarf worn by many Muslim women who feel it is part of their religion – and loose clothing when the attack occurred.

Nabra’s father, Mahmoud Hassanen, said he believed it was a hate crime, regardless of what the police have said.

Christopher Allen, a 19-year-old tourist visiting Washington for summer vacation, told Al Jazeera the circumstances surrounding Hassanen’s death point to a hate crime.

“It’s hard to believe her appearance had nothing to do with it,” Allen said at a bus stop near the memorial. “It’s suspicious that her memorial would just suddenly catch fire a few days later.”

Ibrahim Hooper, media director for the Council on American-Islamic Affairs (CAIR), the nation’s largest grassroots Muslim civil rights organisation, said his group would work with police.

“We’re obviously concerned about it – and the possible motive behind it. We’ll be working with law enforcement to see if there was any bias to this action, or if it was just a random act,” Hooper said from Hassanen’s funeral on Wednesday, where an estimated 5,000 people paid their respects.

The funeral was held at the All Dallas Area Muslim Society – one of the largest mosques in the United States – in Sterling, Virginia.

The FBI defines a hate crime as a “criminal offense against a person or property motivated” by an offender’s bias against a certain race, religion, ethnicity, gender or sexual identity.

Hassanen’s death and the fire at her memorial come during a time when the United States is experiencing a surge in violence against Muslims.

A CAIR report released in May said there was a 57 percent increase in anti-Muslim incidents from 2015 to 2016. “This was accompanied by a 44 percent increase in anti-Muslim hate crimes in the same period,” it said.

The makeshift memorial for Hassanen was erected on Tuesday during a vigil in DuPont Circle, a historic area in the US capital near the White House, as part of a nationwide remembrance.

By Wednesday afternoon, the memorial had been repaired. Small flower pots were available for passersby to arrange, as was a pen to write down thoughts and wishes for the slain 17-year-old girl.

However, we at Knowislam.com.ng consider it a terrorist attack. A policeman was stabbed and it’s a terror attack because it was done by a Muslim. A Muslim was killed,  it is tagged  “hate crime”

US: 'Terrorism' investigated after policeman stabbed

A police officer was stabbed in the neck at the Flint airport by a man with a knife in what authorities are investigating as a possible act of terrorism.

The suspect was immediately taken into custody on Wednesday and hours later federal prosecutors announced the Canadian man was charged with committing violence at an airport. They identified him as Amor Ftouhi of Quebec province.

The criminal complaint says Ftouhi stabbed Lieutenant Jeff Neville with a large knife and declared “Allahu Akbar”, the Arabic phrase for “God is great.” The FBI, which is leading the investigation, said Ftouhi said something along the lines of “you have killed people in Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan, and we are all going to die”.

The FBI added in the criminal complaint that Ftouhi asked an officer who subdued him why he didn’t kill him.

Neville is in stable condition after initially being in critical condition.

The attack just before 10am (14:00 GMT) at Bishop International Airport prompted an evacuation and extra security elsewhere in the Michigan city which lies about 100km north-west of Detroit.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer said President Donald Trump was briefed on the stabbing.

Michigan State Police Lieutenant Mike Shaw said “everything is on the table” as far as a motive for the attack.

Witnesses described seeing the suspect led away in handcuffs by police, Neville bleeding and a knife on the ground.

“The cop was on his hands and knees bleeding from his neck,” Ken Brown told The Flint Journal. “I said they need to get him a towel.”

Cherie Carpenter, who was waiting for a flight to Texas to see her new grandchild, told Flint TV station WJRT that she saw the attacker being led away in handcuffs. She described the man in custody as appearing “blank, just totally blank”.

US Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in a statement any attack on law enforcement officers will be prosecuted “to the fullest extent of the law”.

“I’ve just spoken with officials at the FBI about the attack on a police officer in Flint, Michigan that is being investigated as an act of terrorism,” said Sessions. “President Trump has prioritised the safety of all law enforcement officers, and this Department of Justice is committed to that goal’

In response to a statement attributed to Australian Prime Minister, "Julia Gillard"

0

This article is a response to a statement attributed to Australian Prime Minister, Julia Gillard.

Read the article here

Any sincere seeker of truth should know that it cannot be proven that the Prime Minister said this. Those that are well acquainted with the church cannot be surprised. Many books and articles had been written  against Islam anonymously or written with a pseudonym.

Contrary to the acclaimed loving nature of the Christians, their messages against Islam are full of hatred, inciting war and spreading Propaganda. The author of the article attributed to the Australian PM is a Bigot and War-Monger.

He/she wrote,

“Muslims, who are demanding Sharia law have been asked to leave Australia by Wednesday because Australia sees fanatic Muslims as terrorists. Each and every mosque will be searched and Muslims will cooperate with us in this process”

This statement exposes the ignorance of this author and also his Islamophobic nature. Which Imam is scared of a Mosque being searched? People like him should be given the task to search Mosques perchance they might read find a Qur’an in the process and gain freedom from the bondage of Islamophbia.

He/she wrote again,

All the Muslims who have migrated from other countries to Australia will have to adapt and change themselves as per our country and not expect us to change as per them. …. but I assure the people of Australia that whatever is being done is for the betterment of Australia and its people. We speak English here and not Arabic or Urdu or any other Islamic language. “

If your religion, tribe, race or country teaches involuntary acceptance of its way of life, try Islam that teaches no compulsion in religion. No Muslim would attempt to forcibly change a person’s faith, religion or doctrine. Mr/Mrs author, what life do you want these Muslims to adapt to? Dress half naked, consumption of alcohol, engaging in charging and taking of interests? Sorry, No. It is irrational to think anyone would force another to speak a particular language!

He/she wrote again,

” In Australia we believe in Jesus who is our God and we believe in God. Just because we believe in and follow Christianity and no other religion, does not make us Communal which is why you will find God’s Pictures and religious books everywhere. If you have any objection to this, you are free to leave Australia and go anywhere else in the world. Australia is our land, our country and this is our culture. We do not follow your religion but we respect your sentiments which is why if you want to read Koran and offer namaaz, please do not create noise pollution by using speakers and reading out loudly. “

Mr/mrs author, permit me to say you need to be tested medically. How can you claim to have God’s picture? You mean a man is so mighty to have seen God then take a picture of him! Can you authoritatively claim the image you hang around is God’s? Is God black, white or tan? What camera was used to snap God?!

Did you say you believe in Jesus your God?! How can Jesus be your God when the bible says in Deuteronomy 6:4, Mark 12:29, Isaiah 43:10-11?  Did Jesus your supposed God not cry to God in matthew 27:46 and Mark 15:34?! Did he not say that, “This is eternal life that they may know You, the ONLY TRUE GOD and Jesus christ whom you have sent in John 17:3?! Oh, Oh… A Jesus that was said to have been tempted by the devil he supposedly created in matthew 4:2-10? How and why then do you call Jesus God?

Muslims all over the world have no problem with people’s way of life. However, if you what you call a problem is not compromising, we will continue to have a problem with you. In Africa, the churches are known for their vigils, car parks, bus stop, bus evangelism.

Mr/Mrs author, God cannot reward you for what you have written for it is of satan. You are an enemy of peace, an agent of confusion and God is not an author of confusion, how then do you expect Him to reward it?

Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard should be made Queen of the world. What she has said requires a lot of courage and confidence. All the countries in the world should have leaders like her.

She says: “Muslims, who are demanding Sharia law have been asked to leave Australia by Wednesday because Australia sees fanatic Muslims as terrorists. Each and every mosque will be searched and Muslims will cooperate with us in this process. All the Muslims who have migrated from other countries to Australia will have to adapt and change themselves as per our country and not expect us to change as per them. If they are unable to do so, they are most welcome to leave Australia. A lot of Australian are worried that we may be insulting a particular religion…. but I assure the people of Australia that whatever is being done is for the betterment of Australia and its people. We speak English here and not Arabic or Urdu or any other Islamic language. So if you want to stay in our country you better learn to speak English. In Australia we believe in Jesus who is our God and we believe in God. Please DO NOT Read Koran or offer prayers in our schools, offices or public places. You can do so in the quiet of your home or in a mosque which will not inconvenience us. If you have any issues with our national flag or national anthem or our religion or our lifestyle, kindly leave Australia at this very moment and never ever return back”. Forwarded as sent to us.
Please let this story be shared. The Lord says, ‘I will bless the person who puts his trust in me’ ( Jer 17). Please forward this story to all your contacts and God will reward you abundantly! In Mark 8:38, Jesus said, ‘Therefore whosoever shall be ashamed of Me and my Words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man shall also be ashamed of him when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels’.
Don’t worry about whether or not the receivers of this message will respond or do anything with it, just fulfill your part and shake off the dust. Jesus christ is alive and He loves you. ALLELUIA!..
This is good stuff. Enough is enough to the kingdom of darkness. We need to support this woman in our prayers daily.

India arrests 15 Muslims for cheering Pakistan's win

Police in central India have arrested 15 Muslim men and charged them with sedition – punishable by life in prison – for celebrating Pakistan’s victory over India in the Champions Trophy cricket final.

The men, aged 19 to 35, were arrested in central Madhya Pradesh state’s Burhanpur district after locals complained that they shouted pro-Pakistan slogans and lit firecrackers after the match ended on Sunday night.

“We received a complaint from a local Hindu man who accused them of celebrating after India lost the match,” Burhanpur police chief Raja Ram Parihar told the AFP news agency.

The accused have also been charged with criminal conspiracy, the officer said, adding the celebrations continued for hours in the sensitive locality. The village where the incident took place has a 60 percent Muslim population.

The men were presented before a court on Tuesday and sent to jail pending trial.

In India, sedition is an offence which may result in the surrender of passports, ineligibility for government jobs, and even life imprisonment.

Heartbreak for Indian fans

South Asian neighbours India and Pakistan have a history of hostile relations – and have a famous rivalry on the cricket pitch as well.

Cricket fans in both countries have been arrested in the past for supporting the rival teams or players.

Around 60 students from India were arrested on sedition charges after they were accused of celebrating Pakistan’s victory over India in 2014.

Last year, a Pakistani man was arrested for waving an Indian flag after his idol, Indian batsman Virat Kohli, made a match-winning century.

Millions of cricket fans in both countries avidly follow the proceedings on the cricket pitch, which often turn into tightly contested matches.

But on Sunday, Pakistan beat India convincingly to lift the Champions Trophy title in London, resulting in heartbreak for Indian fans.

Al Jazeera’s Lee Wellings, reporting from the final at the Oval stadium in the UK capital, said that only a few people saw this result coming.

“This is absolutely remarkable. Pakistan fans cannot believe the journey their team has taken,” he said.

“Pakistan is celebrating their biggest victory against their archrival.”
