He, (SWT) has also stated clearly the class of people that shouldn’t be married.
An-Nur 24:3

The fornicator does not marry except a [female] fornicator or polytheist, and none marries her except a fornicator or a polytheist, and that has been made unlawful to the believers.
Al-Baqarah 2:221

And do not marry polytheistic women until they believe. And a believing slave woman is better than a polytheist, even though she might please you. And do not marry polytheistic men [to your women] until they believe. And a believing slave is better than a polytheist, even though he might please you. Those invite [you] to the Fire, but Allah invites to Paradise and to forgiveness, by His permission. And He makes clear His verses to the people that perhaps they may remember.

With the above verses, Allah has forbidden us from marrying the polytheists or marrying our women to them, however polytheists in this context are strictly idolaters. He further declared the permissibility to marry the women of the scripture (Christians and Jews) in Qur’an 5:5
(Lawful to you in marriage) are chaste women from those who were given the Scripture (Jews and Christians) before your time when you have given their due dowry, desiring chastity (i.e., taking them in legal wedlock) not committing illegal sexual intercourse.

And the impermissibility to marry off a Muslim woman to a non Muslim in Qur’an 60:10

They are not lawful (wives) for them, nor are they lawful (husbands) for them.

From above, It is clearly forbidden for Muslim women to marry both idolators and people of the book, but permissible for muslim men, however it is an act that was very detested by the early Muslims

Allah says;

And do not marry Al-Mushrikat (idolatresses) till they believe (worship Allah Alone).

Allah prohibited the believers from marrying Mushrik women who worship idols.

Although the meaning is general and includes every Mushrik woman from among the idol worshippers and the People of the Scripture, Allah excluded the People of the Scripture from this ruling.

“Umar disliked this practice so that the Muslims do not refrain from marrying Muslim women, or for similar reasons.”

An authentic chain of narrators stated that Shaqiq said:

Once Hudhayfah married a Jewish woman and Umar wrote to him, “Divorce her.”

He wrote back, “Do you claim that she is not allowed for me so that I divorce her?”

He said, “No. But, I fear that you might marry the whores from among them.”

Ibn Jarir related that Zayd bin Wahb said that;

Umar bin Khattab said, “The Muslim man marries the Christian woman, but the Christian man does not marry the Muslim woman.”

Ibn Abu Hatim said that;

Ibn Umar disliked marrying the women from the People of the Scripture. He relied on his own explanation for the Ayah:
وَلَا تَنكِحُواْ الْمُشْرِكَاتِ حَتَّى يُوْمِنَّ
(And do not marry Al-Mushrikat (female idolators) till they believe (worship Allah Alone).

Al-Bukhari also reported that Ibn Umar said,

“I do not know of a bigger Shirk than her saying that Jesus is her Lord!”
There should be nothing more pleasing to the heart of a believing man than a believing woman who shares your jannah focused goals with ideal Islamic objectives in building your home. With a dashing hope of continuing the beautiful love story in Jannah.

…….And indeed a slave woman who believes is better than a (free) Mushrikah (female idolators), even though she pleases you. but Allah invites (you) to Paradise and forgiveness by His leave and makes His Ayat clear to mankind that they may remember……

May Allah provide the single Muslims with pious Muslims and Muslimahs, and increase the Love in the already existing Nikkah. Aamin.

Inter-Religious Marriage

0

Marriage is the legally or formally recognized union of two people as partners in a personal relationship (historically and in some jurisdictions specifically a union between a man and a woman).

In Islam, marriage is very important aspect of the religion, an highly rewarding act which abandoning it without any genuine reason is totally forbidden. A commandment from Allah, as established in several verses of the Quran, and supported by various hadith.
An-Nur 24:32

And marry the unmarried among you and the righteous among your male slaves and female slaves. If they should be poor, Allah will enrich them from His bounty, and Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.

Narrated By `Abdullah : We were with the Prophet (PBUH) while we were young and had no wealth whatever. So Allah`s Apostle said, “O young people! Whoever among you can marry, should marry, because it helps him lower his gaze and guard his modesty (i.e. his private parts from committing illegal sexual intercourse etc.), and whoever is not able to marry, should fast, as fasting diminishes his sexual power.”
Sahih Bukhari

Having established that marriage is a spiritual duty that must be fulfilled. Like other aspects of Islam, Marriage has principles and guidelines that is to be followed. Allah has given us the direct command on how many wives a Muslim can marry, and obligations that must be fulfilled before the marriage contract can be sealed. Allah said in the Quran
An-Nisa’ 4:3

And if you fear that you will not deal justly with the orphan girls, then marry those that please you of [other] women, two or three or four. But if you fear that you will not be just, then [marry only] one or those your right hand possesses. That is more suitable that you may not incline [to injustice].

Almighty Allah (SWT) has also commanded believing men to marry believing women whom they can afford to cater for and perform binding obligations according to how Allah has enriched them.
An-Nisa’ 4:25

And whoever among you cannot [find] the means to marry free, believing women, then [he may marry] from those whom your right hands possess of believing slave girls. And Allah is most knowing about your faith. You [believers] are of one another. So marry them with the permission of their people and give them their due compensation according to what is acceptable. [They should be] chaste, neither [of] those who commit unlawful intercourse randomly nor those who take [secret] lovers. But once they are sheltered in marriage, if they should commit adultery, then for them is half the punishment for free [unmarried] women. This [allowance] is for him among you who fears sin, but to be patient is better for you. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

HIJAB WEARERS ARE UNAVOIDABLY RICH

0

It never occurred to me. I never thought of it. I never realised it until I accidentally, briefly heard a conversation between some two muslim women – one in an all-covering hijab, the other in a head-to-bosom hijab. I really did not know the genesis of the dialogue. But I was doubly sure that one thing must have led to the other, culminating in expression of fulfilment and flexing of muscle.

“Wearing a khimaar (referring to a long hijab as they usually differentiate it) is no joke. No be small thing o, ummu. Hmm! If you don’t have cool cash, you can’t afford yourself a khimaar. Each of my khimaars gulps not less than 4k. I mean #4,000, and I have got them in quantum that I cannot lose count the number in my wardrobe. That even depends on the quality and make of the material, the tallness of the wearer, the style desired, and of course, the seamstress’ reward. So who says covering oneself is actuated by penury? Who says khimaarites aren’t sociable? Such a fellow must be dosing on standing position.”

If hijab alone gulps such a wowing amount, what about the garments underneath – the gown, the skirt, the blouse etc? It implies indisputably that the hijabite’s just one outfit is much more costlier than the one whose attire ends at a gown – a blouse on a skirt or on the ignominious ‘tight-fainted’ pencil-jean which has lamentably led to the exorbitance and/or dearth of men’s trousers in the market. Go shopping to buy just a pair of jean-trousers, what you see hung all over or packed therein are the ones for ladies. The ones for the male gender are either unavailable or scarcely expensive.

There is nothing good (Islamically) worn by the non-hijabites that is not worn by the hijabites. They wear gowns, hijabites do. They put on skirts, hijabites do. They are clad in blouses, hijabites do ditto. But hijab users queenly attire themselves in an all-protecting naira-consuming garment, non-hijabites do not. Who then is richer?

There is no shortcut or short-run to the acquisition of khimaar – no bend-down-select, no bo si koro, no fairly-usued, no tokunbo etc. If you must wear it, you must buy it brand new. And if you must buy it, you must have handsome penny on you. This is unlike other garments whose fairly, badly-used can be found anywhere. Sometimes, the entire attire (skirt, blouse including shoes) of a non-hijabite may not exceed #2000 or even less. If any muslim lady wears same and tops it up with her divinely prescribed cocoon, the worth of her outfit is calculated at #6000 or more. Who then is richer? If the non-hijabite is the type who patronises big boutiques, her gown or skirt and blouse with a fascinating pair of shoes may be worth #10000 or more. Any muslim lady who dresses similarly and tops it up with her distinguishing cover automatically becomes richer than the former.

Putting on a lengthy, wide hijab is by no means a show of zero civilisation, neither does it render the adherents as social apes. It worries that some muslims cheaply fall for such a fallacious, hallucinatory distortion orchestrated by ignorant and ignoble allies of the Lucifer – the chief enemy of Islam. What do they consider as civilisation? Cladding in cloths such as: bumper, jumper, backless, frontless, breastless, leggings, mini-skirt, pencil-jean. I even heard that there is one which mustn’t take a pant. They say it is uncivilised to do so. Chai! People really have pains in their heads. All the skimpy dresses that are used to portray the big-girl syndrome are casually, informally worn by hijabites within the shores of their houses, and only to be seen by their kingly husbands. For them, it is senseless, preposterous, pathological, psychiatric, psychotic, neurotic to roam the streets undressed as such.

Some people, muslims inclusive, say the all-covering hijab is usually accompanied by heat. Therefore, wearing a khimaar is like deliberately chastising oneself. That is why some muslim ladies remain static and have never grown out of their dressing level. Meanwhile, these same people will enjoin adherence to the English corporate dress, where a man or even a woman wears a round-neck undergarment, places a shirt on it, tops it up with the usually thick suit and then knots a tie round the neck. The wearer may be in the office or on the field for several hours without having a touch on the tie or pulling off the suit, as may be statutorily, obligatorily required, even if his body rains sweats on account of heat. Who then should be lampooned? Who is punishing himself? The suit wearer or the khimaar user whose garment is light and takes no rope.

Khimaarites are queenly. Even in this age of hyper-civilisation and modern jaahiliyyah, queens do not dress in skimpy cloths. Even if they used to be champions of beauty pageantry, immediately their hubbies are crowned king, the short, tight-fitted dresses they were used to will become anachronistic, antiquated, antediluvian, archaic i.e. outdated.

In the days of yore, covering the whole body including the face was a peculiarity of queens and highly revered female personalities. In Rome, Persia, Arab, Asia etc., it was unforgivably and punishably sacrilegious for the queen to step out of the walls of the palace without the body properly covered alongside the face. Doing less of this was considered roaming clothless – naked.

HEAR OUR CRY (Syrians plea to Muslims).

0

They plunder us to our shirts; shackled in flatirons,

Pinned helpless to the floor,

Satiators of their lustful orgies,

Sonorous cries in vain,

Outroared by missiles from clouldless skies,

Maternal wails of anguish,

Of a mother in painfull loss,

Of a just son,

Unjustly slained,

Burned to crisp on a holy plain,

Where many are buried over again,

Dry tears of yearn,

Seeking repose from disdain,

”Mercy, mercy” our tearful plea,

To no avail it seems,

Impregnable to these hearts,

Fibred by stone and steel,

In our vitiated bodies; we wail,

Our feast of joy is but a dish of pain,

Our homes; A pile of grave,

Unto our lord; we cry

Hear our cry; brethren is faith.

Variant of Qur’an 33: 56 – A Myth

0

Some Islamophobes use a narration from al-Suyuti’s al-Ittiqan to insinuate as if there was a variant in Qur’an 33:56 in the mushaf of ‘Aisha -may Allah be pleased with her. Some cults use the same report to attack the mainstream Muslim texts and scholarship.

Let’s bury this lie as well.

The narration:

Quoting from Abu ‘Ubayd Qasim bin Salam’s Fada’il al-Qur’an, al-Suyuti puts the narration as;

Humaydah bint Abi Yunus narrates: “My father who was eighty years old recited for me the verse of salutation from the Mushaf of Aisha: “Allah and His angels send blessings on the Prophet: O ye that believe! Send ye blessings on him, and salute him with all respect. And on those who came to the first lines of prayers.” She said, “[It was so] before Uthman changed (ghayyara) the Masahif.” (al-Ittiqan 3/82 Section 47)

The narration comes of Abu ‘Ubayd’s Fada’il al-Qur’an 1/324. It is also narrated by Ibn Abi Dawud in his Kitabul Masahif No.238

The issues:

There are two issues here.

1- Did ‘Aisha –may Allah be pleased with her- actually consider the words “And on those who came to the first lines of prayers.” a part of the Qur’anic text?

2- Did Uthman –may Allah be pleased with him- actually changed the Masahif in the sense of distorting them? Why did he change the Masahif?

Authenticity of the narration:

Firstly the narration is not reliable according to the rules of reporting. It has been graded as Da’if (i.e. weak) due to the weakness of a sub narrator Muhammad bin Abi Humayd. See,

Al-Ittiqn fi ‘Uloom al-Qur’an with research of scholars at Markaz Dirasat al-Qur’ania, Saudi Ministry of Publications p.1458

Kitabul Masahif with research by Dr. Muhibbudin Wa’iz, Darul Basha’ir al-Islamiyya, Beirut, 2002 part 1.p.370

Reality of the issues:

Let me elaborate on the two issues raised on this narration.

Truth about the additional words in Qur’an 33:56:

1- The additional words i.e. “And on those who came to the first lines of prayers” were never a part of the Qur’anic text. These words are actually a Hadith of the Messenger of Allah –may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. Reports on this account come from Bara’ bin al-‘Azib and Sayyidah ‘Aisha herself –may Allah be pleased with them both. Narrations from ‘Aisha –may Allah be pleased with her- are found in Sahih Ibn Hibban (Hadith 2163, 2164) as well but the similar words as in the narration under consideration are found in al-Mu’jam of Abu Bakr Muhammad bin Ibrahim Ibn al-Muqri’ (d. 381 A.H.).

It is narrated from ‘Aisha that she said: The Prophet –may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him- said: “Verily Allah Almighty and His angels send blessings on (those who pray in) first lines (in salaah).” (al-Mu’jam li-Ibn al-Muqri’ Hadith 1218, Dar al-Kotob al-Ilmiyah, Beirut, 2003 p.225. The report has been classified as Sahih)

It is clear that ‘Aisha –may Allah be pleased with her- actually heard it from the Holy Prophet –may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him- as a Hadith. It is thus easy to understand that she added these words to her personal manuscript with Qur’an 33:56 only because it is related to point mentioned there. Actually it is only due to the importance of the issue Sayyidah ‘Aisha had written these words along with the verse mentioning something similar i.e. Allah and His angels sending blessings.

Ibn al-Jazri writes about the fact of companions writing additional material in their personal masahif;

“At times they used to add to the recital the commentary for clarification and explanation for they were people knowledge. As they had learnt the Qur’an from the Prophet –may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him, so they were safe from any confusion (between the actual Qur’an and its commentary). And at times some of them would even write it along with the actual text.” (al-Nashr fil Qira’at al-‘Ashr 1/32. Also quoted in al-Ittiqan fi ‘Uloom al-Qur’an)

A similar case regarding ‘Aisha’s –may Allah be pleased with her- personal mushaf has been explained earlier.

Did ‘Uthman distort the masahif?

The second issue is, if ‘Uthman distorted the Masahif? An ordinary reader would get the impression from the wording of the otherwise dubious narration that ‘Uthman distorted the masahif. This is far from the truth!

Actually ‘Uthman –may Allah be pleased with him- involved himself with the process of doing away with anything that could give rise to controversies about the Qur’anic text as we have earlier discussed. In this case too, he was simply trying to get all the masahif uniform or confiscating and even destroying some personal masahif.

Details of his bid at changing the masahif can be understood from the following narrations.

Talking about the reaction of Ibn Masud to ‘Uthman’s afforts, Khumayr bin Malik said:

“Changes (ghayyara) in the Masahif were ordered.” (Musnad Ahmad, Hadith 3929)

And further according to Ibn Abi Dawud’s Kitab al-Masahif Abu Qilabah reports that Malik bin Anas (grandfather of Imam Malik) told him;

“When the mushaf had been prepared [‘Uthman] wrote to people of all cities: ‘I have done so and so. And I have omitted (from the mushaf) what was with me (of commentary and abrogated part), so you too erase (from the masahif) what is with you (of the same).’” (Kitab al-Masahif, Narration 75)

Conclusion:

Even if the narration is accepted it does not put to question the stability of and uniformity of the Qur’an text with all Muslims. ‘Aisha –may Allah be pleased with her- had added the words only because they were relevant to the Qur’an and she had heard these from the Messenger of Allah –may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. What she did was a known practice with some of the Companions, and it never caused confusion to the Muslims as a community.

And ‘Uthman –may Allah be pleased with him- did not distort the masahif, rather he simply arranged for getting the commentary notes etc. removed from the masahif to avoid any potential trouble.

in-sha’Allah some other famous lies of the kind will be responded to in coming days.

Indeed Allah knows the best!

Word of God

It was then that I began to look into the seams of your doctrine. I wanted
only to pick at a single knot; but when I had got that undone, the whole
thing raveled out. And then I understood that it was all machinesewn. —Henrik Ibsen, Ghosts, Act II
Jesus is identified in the Holy Qur’an as a “Word” from Allah. Surah 3:45 reads,
“Behold! the angels said:
“O Mary! Allah gives you glad tidings of a Word from Him: his
name will be the Messiah, the son of Mary, held in honor in this world and
the Hereafter and of (the company of) those nearest to Allah” (TMQ 3:45).
In biblical contrast, John 1:1 reads: “In the beginning was the Word, and the
Word was with God, and the Word was God.” Christian exegesis on this point is that
Jesus is the Word of God, which means the logos—the Greek word for “word,” or “saying.” This redundant reasoning satisfies some, but not those who realize the
explanation repeats the assertion. The question, “What does it mean?” is left unanswered.
The point is that a statement must rest upon a foundation of axioms, or self
evident truths, if it is to be considered factual. Axioms establish a clear knowledge base
from which valid conclusions can be derived. Should conclusions violate foundational
axioms, these same conclusions are considered to fall outside the bounds of reason. In the
field of mathematics, a simple axiom is that one plus one equals two. Anyone in the
world can place an apple next to an apple and see that, by definition, there are now two
apples. Add one more and there are three. Should a scientist later derive some new and
revolutionary concept, but one that violates the axiom that one plus one equals two, the
whole theory is rendered invalid. In the case of the Christian concept of Jesus being “the
Word,” the doctrine unravels, for the simple reason that there are no axioms—there are
no selfevident truths. All that exists is a reshuffling of words.
On the other hand, Islam teaches that the “Word of God” is the word by which
Allah commands things into existence—the Arabic word kun, meaning “be.” The
foundational axiom in this regard is that God creates through willing things into
existence. And just as He willed into existence every big, every little, every thing, He
created Jesus through His divine command, “Be.” Surah 3:47 points out: “Allah creates
what He wills: when He has decreed a Plan, He but says to it, ‘Be,’ and it is!”
In the Bible we find the first example of the “Word of God,” Islamically speaking,
in Genesis 1:3: God said “Let there be …”—and it was! Returning to the Holy Qur’an,
surah 3:59 reads, “The similitude of Jesus before God is as that of Adam; He created him
from dust, then said to him: ‘Be’: and he was.”

To vow to other than Allah is an act of Shirk

Allah the Most Exalted said: “They (are those who) fulfill (their) vows, and they fear a Day whose evil will be wide-
spreading.” (76:7)

Allah the Most Exalted also said: “And whatever you spend for spendings (e.g. in Sadaqah charity etc. for Allah’s cause) or
whatever vow you make, be sure Allah knows it all.” (2:270)

Narrated ‘Aishah (May Allah be pleased with him) that Allah’s Messenger (May the peace and blessing of Allah be upon him) said: “Whoever vows that he will be obedient to Allah, he should be obedient to Him; and whoever made a vow that he will disobey Allah, he should not disobey Him”.
(Al-Bukhari)

Important issues of the Chapter

1) Fulfillment of the vow is obligatory.

2) Since it is approved that making a vow is an act of worship to Allah, then directing a vow to other than Allah is committing Shirk.

3) Any vow based on disobedience (to Allah the Almighty) is impermissible to be carried out.

At least 100 civilians have been killed over the past 48 hours by US-led air attacks targeting fighters in Raqqa, the de-facto capital of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS) in Syria.

Residents told Al Jazeera on Tuesday that at least 100 civilians had been killed since Sunday, with 55 civilians killed in the eastern neighbourhoods of Bedou and al-Sukhani on Monday.

Meanwhile, the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) put Monday’s death toll at 42, including 19 children and 12 women, and said 27 were killed on Sunday – a two-day total of 69 people.

The deaths came on the second consecutive day of a ferocious bombing campaign in Raqqa, more than half of which has been captured by the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) battling ISIL.

“The tolls are high because the air strikes are hitting neighbourhoods in the city centre that are densely packed with civilians,” SOHR director Rami Abdel Rahman told the AFP news agency.

“There are buildings full of civilians that are trying to get away from the front lines.

“Coalition air strikes are targeting any building where any kind of [ISIL] movements are being detected.”

Earlier this month, the aid group Doctors Without Borders (known by its French acronym, MSF) reported that food and medicine needed to treat the wounded were in short supply.

“In Raqqa city, if you don’t die from air strikes, you die by mortar fire; if not by mortars then by sniper shots; if not by snipers, then by an explosive device,” MSF said, quoting a 41-year-old who fled Raqqa after losing seven family members in the fighting.

“And if you get to live, you are besieged by hunger and thirst, as there is no food, no water, no electricity.”

Thousands trapped

The US-led coalition, which operates in both Syria and neighbouring Iraq, says it takes all possible measures to avoid civilian casualties.

In August, it acknowledged the deaths of 624 civilians in its attacks in Syria and Iraq since 2014, but rights groups say the number is much higher.

The United Nations estimates there are up to 25,000 civilians trapped inside the city, with food and fuel supplies short and prohibitively expensive.

The UN’s humanitarian point man for Syria, Jan Egeland, has said ISIL-held territory in Raqqa city is now “the worst place” in the war-torn country.

The Syrian conflict, which began with peaceful protests in March 2011 against President Bashar al-Assad, has spiralled into a multi-sided civil war.

The death toll stands at more than 400,000 people killed, according to UN estimates.

Iraqi forces make gains against ISIL in Tal Afar push

As battle for ISIL-held city of Tal Afar intensifies, Pentagon chief Jim Mattis makes unannounced visit to Iraq.

US-backed Iraqi forces say they are making gains in their ongoing push to dislodge ISIL fighters from the northern city of Tal Afar, as the Pentagon chief made a surprise visit to Iraq in a show of support.

The joint Iraqi forces took control of al-Jazirah area, in the eastern side of Tal Afar on Tuesday, as troops and members of the Shia Popular Mobilisation forces started heading towards the city centre, a security source told the DPA news agency.

ISIL fighters, estimated to number up to 1,000, reportedly responded with artillery fire, as the government forces massed outside the city. The city has been under ISIL control since 2014.

MAPPED: The battle against ISIL

Al Jazeera’s Osama bin Javaid, reporting from Erbil in northern Iraq, quoted military sources as saying forces are moving in from the western and northeastern front of the city, adding that they have taken control of an oil refinery “and breached the city’s walls”.

“Their movement was swift earlier, but now the real battle begins,” he said on Tuesday, the third day since the start of the offensive.

Army, police and units of the Popular Mobilisation forces also took “full control” of Tal Afar’s al-Kifah and al-Nur districts, Popular Mobilisation spokesman Ahmed al-Assadi was quoted by the AFP news agency as saying.

Assadi said the Iraqi forces had encircled the city despite the “intense” fighting, adding that the offensive would likely last for weeks.

Tal Afar, located some 70km west of the recently recaptured city of Mosul, is a key ISIL hub between Iraq’s second largest city and the Syrian border.

In July, Iraqi troops, supported by the forces of a US-led coalition, routed ISIL in Mosul, allowing it to advance into Tal Afar on Sunday. ISIL still controls other areas in the south and west of Mosul.

The latest offensive has forced thousands of people to flee to the country’s Kurdish region, according to the United Nations.

On Tuesday, Al Jazeera’s bin Javaid reported that fleeing residents had to travel 10 to 20 hours to escape the fighting.

“It’s a very desperate picture. Some people weren’t even fully-clothed … as they tried to reach safety,” he said.

Since Friday, more than 3,000 people had arrived at two emergency sites, many with just the clothes on their back, according to the International Organization for Migration.

UNHCR, the UN’s refugee agency also said it had received some 9,000 people at the Hamman al-Alil transit centre in the past week, and it was preparing to accommodate nearly 30,000 more.

Mattis visit

As the fighting continues, US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis, who made an unannounced visit to Iraq, declared that “ISIS is on the run”, following his meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi in Baghdad.

“Today, the security for the Iraqi people has been greatly improved,” Mattis said. “Cities have been liberated. People are free from ISIS … the economy is recovering.”

Trump and Abadi discuss how to ‘get rid of’ ISIL

But Mattis declined to make any predictions on the battle.

“ISIS’s days are certainly numbered, but it’s not over yet and it’s not going to be over anytime soon,” he said.

Mattis then left for Erbil, the capital of Iraq’s Kurdish semi-autonomous region, where he is scheduled to hold a meeting with President Massoud Barzani.

A key sticking point in the meeting is Iraqi Kurdistan’s plan for an independence referendum on September 25, strongly opposed by the US and Baghdad.

Barzani has so far resisted international pressure to delay the referendum.

Brett McGurk, the White House envoy to the anti-ISIL coalition, told the Associated Press news agency that a referendum at this time “would be potentially catastrophic to the counter-ISIS campaign”.
