DEVELOPMENT OF THE UMMAH: An Extension of Personal Development of Every Muslim.

— Bello Nafisat Omowumi

It is no news that the Muslim Ummah is in a deplorable state. We are battling disunity amongst ourselves, ineptitude in leadership, ideological warfare between the liberal movements -secularism, Atheism, and all the isms that sprang up from the West. Also culminating into this debacle is the ignorance that has prevailed over majority of Muslims, both the pseudo-scholars and their numerous followers. This problem is all because of one reason; deserting the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger.

For a Muslim to be assured safety in this world of confusion, he should ensure that he undergoes a series of Islamic self-development. This is in contrary to the position of those calling for us to unite in order to take our place as rulers of the world. In a nutshell, this article presents the areas every Muslim should focus on in order to develop themselves and contribute their quota to the Ummah.

DEVELOPING OURSELVES TO DEVELOP THE UMMAH.

It has been revealed in the Qur’an that Allah will not change the condition of a group until they themselves change amongst themselves, He (Allah) says: “…Verily! Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change themselves…” (Ra’d 13:11). Therefore, it is on this basis that the following points were proposed:

1. Returning back to the Qur’an and Sunnah, along with the methodology of our pious predecessors: Islam is a collection of rules and articles of faith, of knowledge and action, of things we should know and things we should do. The religion is made up of Aqeedah, Fiqh and Ādāb (etiquettes and socializing). The details related to all of these areas have been addressed in the Qurʾān and Sunnah. The verses of the Qurʾān and the statements of the Prophet (Peace be upon him) are the sources of our religion. The companions (Sahabah) took directly from the Prophet (Peace be upon him) by watching him as a practical example. ‘A’ishah (May Allah be pleased with her) said: “The Qurʾān was his character,” and the Sahabah witnessed the Prophet exemplifying the Qurʾān in his daily life. Ibn Mas’ūd (May Allah be pleased with him) said, “They (the companions) possessed the most pious hearts of this Ummah. They were the most profound in knowledge and had the least constraint. They were a people whom Allāh has chosen for the companionship of His Prophet, so hid character and ways, for by the Lord of the Ka’bah, they are upon the straight path.” [As-Shari`ah by Al-Aajurri]

“O you who believe! Obey Allah and obey the messenger and those of you who are in authority…” (Nisaa 4:59)

2. Acting within the constrict of the Shari’ah in all sphere of our lives: The religious law of Islam is seen as the expression of Allah’s command for Muslims and, in application, constitutes a system of duties that are incumbent upon all Muslims by virtue of their religious belief. The Sharīʿah differs from Western systems of law in two principal respects. In the first place, the scope of the Sharīʿah is much wider, since it regulates the individual’s relationship not only with neighbours and with the state, which is the limit of most other legal systems, but also with God and with the individual’s own conscience:
“Then We have put you (O Muhammad) on plain way of (Our) commandment. So follow you that, and follow not the desires of those who know not” (al_Ja`thiya 45:16).

3. Authenticating our ‘Aqeedah (Creed): The foundation of our faith which qualifies us as Muslims should be strongly fortified in order for our development as an Ummah to be successful. This is the heart of the messages that all Prophets came to teach us, as it was confirmed in numerous Ahadith and verses from the Qur’an, one of which Allah says:
“So know that none has the right to be worshipped except Allah, and ask for forgiveness for your sin, and also for the believing men and women…” Muhammad 47:19

4. Steadfastness upon the path of Islam: The Muslim would face challenges and hardships which could necessitates steadfastness and adherence to his noble principles. Such steadfastness emanates from strong faith and unshakable trust in Allah, and yields its ripe fruits in all spheres of life.

Sufyan Ath-Thaqafi reported, “I said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, tell me about Islam in one word that I would not ask anyone other than you (according to Abu Mu’awiyah he said, “anyone after you”).’ The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, ‘Say I believe in Allah and then stand steadfast.’” (Musnad Ahmad, 14869).

Our Islam should be free from inadequacy and being apologetic: “Verily, those who say our lord is Allah and stood firm, on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve” al-Ahqaf 46:13

5. Seeking Beneficial Knowledge: Islam is a religion of knowledge. Islam gives too much importance on seeking knowledge, as knowledge is the key to success. Seeking knowledge is better than any value in the world. Allah Almighty says in glorious Quran: “And say: My Lord, increase me in knowledge.” (Quran 20:114).

Harnessing knowledge protects us from many difficulties. It has many benefits in this world and also in the hereafter. Learning about religion will make easy for us the path to Paradise:

On the authority of Abu Dharr al-Ghifaari, he said: The Prophet (SAW) said: Whoever follows a path in pursuit of knowledge, Allah will make easy his way to Jannah (Reported by at-Tirmdhi)

The main purpose of seeking knowledge is to bring us closer to our Creator; Allah, The Almighty. It is not simply for the pleasure of the mind or the senses. Knowledge accordingly must be linked to values and goals.

6. Enjoining Good and Forbidding Evil: The diseases of the heart [psychological and spiritual diseases] are worse than diseases of the body. This means that one must find a doctor who is skilled in treating such diseases. Because the diseases of the heart are so many and cause the spread of evil and corruption, Allaah has enjoined the believers to treat these diseases, by enjoining that which is good and forbidding that which is evil. Allaah has made the Muslim Ummah the best nation ever raised up for mankind, in order to do this important task, as Allaah says:
“You (true believers in Islamic Monotheism, and real followers of Prophet Muhammad and his Sunnah) are the best of peoples ever raised up for mankind; you enjoin Al-Ma‘roof (i.e. Islamic Monotheism and all that Islam has ordained) and forbid Al-Munkar (polytheism, disbelief and all that Islam has forbidden), and you believe in Allaah” [Aal ‘Imraan 3:110].

In another verse before this, Allah says:
“ Let there arise out of you a group of people inviting to all that is good, enjoining good and forbidding evil…” [Aal ‘Imraan 3:104]

It was reported in Sahih Muslim from Abu Hurayrah that the Messenger said:
“Whoever among you sees a bad thing, then he should change it with his hand, if he cannot then with his tongue, if he cannot then with his heart and that is the weakest of faith.”

CONCLUSION

If all the aforementioned are carefully followed and jealously guarded, I am sure that the calamities that we experience as Muslims these days would reduce to the barest minimum. If a Muslim who is conscious of what is expected of him on earth busies himself with learning, praying, enjoining goodness, forbidding evil and other acts, he would not have time to dabble into issues that would cause his ship to capsize.

Rev. Matthew Kukah and The Almajiri Children: A Story of Frogs for Dinner By Bashir Lucas Samson Lukman

0

When Rev. Matthew Kukah stated that he would be training Almajiri children, the news was met with different reactions. While many applauded this idea, some Muslims elders wrote and spoke against it (with reasons). From what I gathered, the project is part of the plan by Pope Francis in conjunction with the Kukah Centre and Spanish Foundation, Profofiro to provide digital leadership training for vulnerable youths in the 19 Northern States of Nigeria.

It is understandable when Muslim leaders write and stand up against this when how a lot of Muslim children were Christianized in the name of education comes to mind. Back then, many Muslim children had to choose between their faith and education. Many changed their names, some did not but along the line, changed their faith then become pastor Jinadu, Elder Lasisi etc.

That said, the law of the country is such that the children are Nigerians before Muslims unlike the religion where they are Muslims before Nigerians hence we do not have total control over them but the government. It is also very important to note that we do not have any Moral Right to stand against this idea except we provide what is better. Who would say, “Please, don’t feed and train our children” when nothing is in place for them?

However, the tactics of the missionaries to bring more sheep into the fold is not new and this is the worry of many Muslim leaders. For the missionaries, nothing goes for nothing. Given previous missionary activities in Africa, this project seem to me like we are giving the world to the children to take away there hereafter. Do we then say nothing should be done on this grounds?

Do we have any right to ask to be part of a project we didn’t start or know almost nothing about? Are they now our children when they are to be trained and how dear were our children to us when no help came? There are so many questions but the most important, are we taking frogs for dinner?

TREATMENT OF WOMEN IN ISLAM

TREATMENT OF WOMEN IN ISLAM

BismilLaahir Rahmaanir Raheem.

Taking good care of women and treating them with kindness is an act of worship and whoever treats women especially our wives badly is committing a major sin. Marriage is not slavery but companionship which is a trust from Allah and He will judge us as to how we treated our wives.

Allah says in the Qur’an:
وَعَاشِرُوهُنَّ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ
“Live with them in kindness.” Surat An-Nisa 4:19. This is a command from Allah not a request, as such whoever goes against the commands of Allaah is committing a major sin.

Our beloved Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, also commanded us to treat women well by saying;
“Treat women well, for woman is created from a rib and the most curved portion of the rib is its upper portion. If you try to straighten it, it will break, but if you leave it as it is, it will remain curved. So treat women with kindness.” Sahih Bukhari 3153. To be continued in shaa Allaah. *_May Allah aid us to treat our women well purely for Allah sake not base on their attitude_*. Aameen.

Messenger of Allaah. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, said:
“How does one of you beat his wife as he beats the stallion camel and then embrace her?” Sahih Bukhari 5695. This is a warning from the Prophet that no one should beat his wife. Your wife may have a bad attitude but beating her can only worsen the situation, imagine you are using your China phone and it freezes, are you going to be patient for it to respond or you start beating or hitting it?

The Messenger gave an alternative way to handle such woman by saying: “A believer should not despise a believing woman. If he finds something in her character he dislikes, he will be pleased by something else.” Sahih Muslim 1469. This means we should be patient with them and also look for their good side not bad. To be continued in Shaa Allaah. *_May Allah keep guiding us all and protect us from any satanic influences_*. Aameen.

The best of teachers, Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him and his family thought us how to handle immoral wife by saying:
“I enjoin you to treat women well, for they are like captives in your hand. Verily, you may not treat them otherwise unless they commit flagrant immorality. If they do so, then you may separate from their beds and strike them without causing pain but if they return to good conduct, then you may do nothing against them. You have rights over your wives and they have rights over you. Your right is that they will not allow anyone you dislike to enter your home, and their right is that you should treat them well regarding food and clothing.”
Sunan At-Tirmidhi 1163. To strike her is not to beat her as some ignorants interpret it. Scholars gave example as using miswaak (tooth stick) to hit your child for his or attention to you. The Prophet never hit any of his wives so let’s follow the Sunnah.

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, said:
“The most complete of the believers in faith are those with the best character, and the best of you are the best in behavior to their women.”
Sunan At-Tirmidhi 1162. May Allah aid us to apply the teachings of Allah and His Messenger in our ways of daily life. Aameen.

Christianity, Divine or Defined-Part 2

By Sanusi Olawale Ibn AbdulWasiu (sanoosy)

In the name of Allah the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful

What we don’t bring into light, and don’t acknowledge to ourselves, grows in the dark.

It is not that dogs prefer bones to meat, it’s just that nobody would give them meat in place of bones.

Christianity teaches a lot of messages, but they hardly talk about their origin. Since they don’t like to tell, we will help them tell the stories, so that the World will know that those who choose Islam over Christianity did so because they have been shown the bones and meat, but actually went for the meat.

But knowing the truth is different from accepting it. Allah guides whomever He wishes. May we remain guided. Ameen.

Having concluded the part-one of this topic, which dealt with the Origin of Christianity; how disciples were named Christians; who championed the cause of the naming and the rest, this part will expose how Paul emerged after decades, only to overthrow the real apostles who knew Jesus, saw Jesus, and ate with Jesus. How he started a different message that made those who had believed in the messages of Peter and the likes to change their perception and called Paul and Barnabas “Christians” out of mockery.

Before exposing the can of worms, let us see for ourselves who Peter (whose evangelism first got to Antioch but wasn’t tagged a Christian) was and how Paul suddenly became the only apostle who was always “right”.

Peter’s importance comes from his close association with Jesus during his ministry and his prominence among the Twelve as the Chief Apostle. In the Gospels, he is always the spokesperson and representative of the disciples as a group. It is clear that Peter is the one leading out and shepherding the church. Two other persons who were prominent in the ministry were James and John.

In contrast, Paul comes in only after the Ascension. Not only does he play no role in Jesus’ early ministry, but when he does first appear in Acts, he is making “havoc of the church, entering into every house, and haling men and women committed them to
prison” (Acts 8:3). Paul’s importance comes from the sheer weight of his writings that were collected into the canon and because he is arguably the one who most shapes the Christian message in a way that is both acceptable and enticing to the Gentile world.

Let me give a brief hint about Peter
1. Jesus physically announced Peter as one of his own. (John 1:42). Not through the other way round as the case of Paul. Not through vision.
2. Peter was one of the three in the inner circle of the Gospel of Jesus (Peter, James, and John). They were privileged to participate in things from which the others were excluded (Matthew 17:1; 26:37 ; Mark 5:37 ).
3. If the three were set apart from the rest of the twelve, Peter was even set apart from James and John, due to his “great confession.”
4. Filled with the Spirit, Peter stepped
forward to preach the sermon at Pentecost (Acts 2:14)
5. A prophecy for Peter. Peter would play a crucial role in the establishment of the church. Jesus said this himself.

Mathew 16 18-19,

18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

Yes, you read well. The keys of heaven and earth were given to Peter.
If an unbiased mind which is free from bigotry studied the Peter of the Gospel only and compared to the later Apostle Paul, he should be able to tell the difference.
This is the Peter that extended the gospel to Antioch before Paul and Barnabas came there to distort the well digested message. Paul wasn’t mocked as a Christian, but Paul was. Now I ask, was Paul’s message the same with Peter’s? If yes, why the name calling?

And who was Paul?
Paul was nothing when Jesus was on earth. They gave birth to Paul in 5AD. That is five years after Jesus was no more. He grew up as a Pharisee. Paul (formally Saul) was a hired hit man and enforcer for the Roman appointed-controlled High Priest the traitorous
Caiaphas. He was hostile to the disciples. Paul was dedicated to persecuting the early disciples of Jesus in the area of Jerusalem.

And on a fateful day, Paul was on another mission to persecute the Christians in Damascus when something “irrational” happened to Paul. He saw a light and fell down.
There is a tug of war between Acts 9 and 22 whether those with Paul actually saw the light and heard the voice Paul heard, that was saying…. Saul Saul… why do you persecute me?
And Paul responded, Who are you Lord?

Was Paul taught as a pharisee that when they see a strange light, it is the Lord? A better convincing question should have not included “Lord”. He doesn’t know why the light was shown and who was taking, so why the “Lord”?
In the process, Paul was blinded, so he needed healing.
The most ridiculous part of the story was where the “Lord” of the light that manifested unto Paul directed him to one Ananias in Damascus.
The following questions arise from the story for any christian to provide answers to:
1. Why did the Lord of light directed Paul to Ananias instead of his chosen disciples if truly the Lord was Jesus?
2. Has Jesus suddenly forgotten he already said the key to heaven and earth and even the kingdom of God has been given to Peter? Why didn’t he direct Paul to him? Maybe Peter’s holy spirit has expired, he won’t be able to deliver Paul.
3. And who was this Ananias? Son of who? When did he accept Jesus as his personal Lord and savior and got certified by Jesus himself to heal?
4. Can any Christian prove Ananias was a Christian?
5. A concrete evidence to prove Damascus was under Jerusalem? Paul was to cross border to arrest?

According to the account narrated in Acts 22, one can assume Ananias to be a Jew, an observer of the “Law”. Which law? The law of Moses. And Paul was delivered by a Jew?

Acts22:12

KJV:And one Ananias, a devout man according to the law, having a good report of all the Jews which dwelt there,

ESV:“And one Ananias, a devout man according to the law, well spoken of by all the Jews who lived there,

NIV:“A man named Ananias came to see me. He was a devout observer of the law and highly respected by all the Jews living there.

AMP:And one Ananias, a devout man according to the Law, well spoken of by all the Jews who resided there,

Oh… please! It doesn’t even make any sense. The story is ridiculous! Jews were enemies of Jesus, including the high priests.

When you know how to tell stories, there are people who know how to listen.

These are what various Bible scholars are saying about Ananias.
1. According to Roderick L. Evans , Ananias was a prophet despite being mentioned as a disciple. In his opinion on New Testament prophets, biblical figures who receive a message from God or reveal future events are considered prophets despite alternative titles such as apostle or disciple.
2. Anglican priest and theologian Edward Carus Selwyn recognized Ananias as a prophet.
3. F.F. Bruce suggests that Ananias “has an honoured place in sacred history, and a special claim upon the gratitude of all who in one way or another have entered into the blessing that stems from the life and work of the great apostle.”
4. Ananias is also listed by Hippolytus of Rome and others as one of the Seventy Disciples whose mission is recorded in Luke 10:1-20.

While these scholars are still disputing over the real identity of the Ananias, let me consult Wikipedia.
I am shocked that the Ananias whose role in the conversion of Paul is very important has no record. He is just like Melchizedek. Where he was born was and still an assumption, and where he died is not known except the tradition of the Catholicism which assumed he died in Eleutheropolis. No known father and mother. Check for his link here. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ananias_of_Damascus

That event is so important that the author of Acts records it three times for maximum emphasis: first, as it happens (9:1-19); next, as Paul tells it to the Roman officer in Jerusalem (22:3-21); and, finally, as Paul tells it to the Jewish king, Agrippa II at Caesarea Maritima (26:1-18). But that triple account, written around 50 YEARS after Paul’s death, has two major historical problems.

The first problem is that, according to Acts, Paul was traveling to Damascus empowered with authority from the high-priest to arrest dissident Christian Jews and bring them back to Jerusalem for punishment. But, whatever about high-priestly power in Judea, it could never have been exercised across Roman provincial borders as far away as Damascus. Damascus was not under Jerusalem for God’s sake. So Paul was to cross border to arrest? What a super power he got!

On the other hand, Paul himself tells the Galatians that after that vocational vision, “I went away at once into Arabia, and afterwards I returned to Damascus” (Galatians 1:11-17).

So he went to Arabia with blindness and later returned to Damascus to look for Ananias? What a sour lie!

The second problem is that the three versions of the narrations describe Paul as seeing “a light” and hearing “a voice” (9:3-4; 22:6-7; 36:13-14). According to Acts, Paul does not see Jesus’ face but only hears Jesus’s voice.
On the other hand, Paul himself insists that his sight of the heavenly Jesus makes him equal in authority with the Twelve Apostles who saw the earthly Jesus. As he argues in
his first letter to the Corinthians: “Am I not an apostle? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord?” (9:1). And later: “Last of all, as to one untimely born, he was seen also by me. For I am the least of the apostles, unfit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God” (15:8-9).

One major conclusion from those divergent accounts is that Acts never gives Paul the title of an apostle sent by and therefore subordinate only to God and Christ. Paul is, for Acts, a messenger sent by and therefore subordinate to Jerusalem and Antioch. His call was emphatically inferior to that of the Twelve Apostles.

There is another problem. As with his arrival in Damascus, so also with his departure. Paul and the author of Acts both superficially agree and profoundly disagree there as well. They agree that the the city’s gates were guarded against Paul and that he escaped by a basket lowered through a window in the wall. Today, Damascus’ Bab
Kissan Gate is the traditional site of that
hurried exit.

But who guarded those gates? For Acts, “the Jews plotted to kill him” and they were “watching the gates day and night so that they might kill him” (Acts 9:23-25). But, for Paul, it was not the Damascene Jews but the Nabatean Arabs who were the actual threat. “The governor,” he says, “under King Aretas guarded the city of Damascus in order to seize me” (2 Corinthians 11:32-33).

Why would the Jews in Damascus would even want to kill him? Were they the one who gave him job to persecute?

It is a known fact as confirmed by Paul himself that he didn’t meet any disciple after he departed from Damascus.
Paul has described the nature of his relationship with the original apostles in Jerusalem to show that he had been commissioned directly by God, not by the apostles, to preach the gospel to the Gentiles. He has worked independently from them. In fact his contact with them has been minimal. He did n n Judea except for the “good” reports they heard about his “evangelistic” work in the provinces of Syria and Cilicia. It was a long time before Paul met again with the apostles in Jerusalem, not until fourteen years after his conversion, or about eleven years after his first visit.
With all the years Paul has been preaching Christianity, the disciples still doubted the authenticity of Paul’s calling into the ministry(Acts 9:26).

One should ask, why did the disciples didn’t believe Paul’s conversion story? Simply because Paul’s preaching is totally against the mission of the real Jesus the disciples knew. This distrust of Paul by the apostles
continued. James, the Bishop of Jerusalem and brother of Jesus ( Gal 1:19 ), and whom Paul identifies as an “apostle ” ( Gal.1:19 ), confronts Paul in Acts 21:21 about charges that Paul is guilty of ” apostasia ” -Greek for APOSTASY – from the Law God gave Moses. Apostasy is a charge that one is violating Deuteronomy 13:1-10 where one with true prophecy, signs and wonders is a false prophet solely because one tries to “seduce” and “turn away” another from “the Law given you here today” — the Ten Commandments and concurrent Mosaic commands. In the Greek Septuagint of 257 BC, the Hebrew word for “seduce” or “turn away” is translated in Greek in Deut 13:10 as the active verb form of “apostasia” meaning to “turn away”.

In Acts 21:21, this James known as James the Just — who was one of the “apostles” in Paul’s mind — asks Paul to reassure everyone that Paul is not guilty of ” apostasia ” by performing a vow and ritual that comes from
Numbers 6 — part of the Mosaic Law. Paul complies, and says nothing to dissuade James’ confidence that Paul is not an apostate from the Law. Paul is hanging by a thin reed here. We must wonder about what would happen when the apostles of Jerusalem find out what Paul’s true views were, such as in Romans 7:1-7. Paul is just what tortoise is in those African folktales, a cunny man. Jesus, whom Paul claimed revealed himself to said he wasn’t sent to abolish the Law But Paul came later to rubbish the Law.

There were people who believed in Jesus Christ as a prophet of God, they didn’t believe Jesus was divine. One of them was the Ebionites. And the other was the Judaizers. The differences between them is that, the Ebionites were loyal to James the brother of Jesus and they were Jewish people while the Judaizers were the non-jewish people in Antioch who were fortunate to accept the truth when Peter and other disciples went to Antioch with the Gospel. If personalities like Peter and James followers are obeying the laws of Moses which Jesus himself didn’t come to abolish and obeyed, why should Paul preached against it?

The Ebionites excluded Paul’s Writings as Written by an Apostate. It does not require us to wait for long to learn the apostolic conclusion to what began in Acts 21:21 — examining Paul for apostasy. The Ebionites — the Jerusalem Church under the twelve, declared Paul’s writings are “excluded” from being read by believers, because Paul is guilty of “apostasy.”
For example, Irenaeus (early 100s -202 AD), wrote that the Ebionites from an early stage “use the Gospel of Matthew only, and repudiate…Paul, maintaining that he was an apostate from the Law .” (Irenaeus, Against Heresies 1.26 .)
Eusebius in 325 AD likewise said the Ebionites “thought it was necessary to reject all the epistles of the apostle [Paul] whom they called an apostate from the Law .” (Eusebius, Hist. of the Church 3.27 .)

Ebionites was designation at first. It was a common name for all Christians , as Epiphanius (d. 403 AD) testifies. Adv. Haer. xxix.” (G. Ulhorn, “Ebionites,” A Religious Encyclopedia (ed. Philip Schaff) (1891) vol. 2.

More proof the Ebionites were the apostolic church was found in the Dead Sea Scrolls. There scholars found a remnant writing for the community known as the EBION at Jerusalem whose leader — the Zaddik – the “JUST ONE” in Hebrew — was battling the “Spouter of Lies” over whether “works” were necessary for righteousness besides faith. They were arguing over Habakuk 2:4 – Paul’s frequent proof text for faith alone. James, the bishop of Jerusalem, was in fact known as James the Just. This fits the label Zaddik — a Hebrew word meaning Just One. The debate with Paul, who often deflects charges he is “lying,” was over the proof text Paul misused twice – Habakkuk 2:4. It takes no stretch to deduce the Ebionites were the church of James and the twelve depicted in Acts 15. As Professor Eisenman, an expert on the Dead Sea Scrolls, persuasively argues about this Dead Sea Scroll document, that it has an uncanny parallel to Paul and the Just One – James the Just, as well as the name of the earliest Christians being the EBIONITES.

Incidentally, this means also that the Dead Sea Scroll document at issue known as the Damascus Document is further proof of the apostolic rejection of Paul.

This name, “Ebionite” meant The Poor in Hebrew from EBION meaning ‘the poor.’ Thus because the name Ebionites was used earliest to refer to all believers before the term “Christians” was first used at Antioch, it is logical to infer this was the earliest name of the church under the apostles. Before the Judaizers came up among the gentiles.

But looking at it from another angle, why not leave the word “Christian” in the Greek and just transliterate it instead of translating it to Latin?

Bibles like the Jewish Christian Bible didn’t use the word “Christian ” in Acts 11:26 but “Messianic believers”

We left the word Muslim untranslated, English language and other languages got no option other than to just borrow the word and add to their vocabulary while relating the meaning to the translation.

The Greek word Χριστιανός, transliterated into English as Christianós , is derived from the Greek word Χριστός, transliterated into English as Christós , an adjective meaning “anointed,” which is often used in the Greek New Testament as a substantive meaning “anointed one.”
If Χριστός means “anointed (one),” what does Χριστιανός mean? The answer lies in the suffix -ανός which is actually the Greacized transliteration and equivalent of the Latin suffix -anus .

In “Studies in Jewish and Christian
History: Part Three” , Elias Joseph Bickerman wrote, All these Greek terms, formed with the Latin suffix -ianus , exactly as the Latin words of the same derivation, express the idea that the men or things referred to, belong to the person to whose name the suffix is added. In Greek as in Latin the suffix -ianus is a substitute for the possessive genitive…
The term Καισαριανοί corresponds to the ellipse Καίσαρος ( Caesaris servus [“a slave of Caesar”]) in other documents. The “Christians” belong to Christ, they are οί τοῦ χριστοῦ [“those of Christ”] as Paul says.

For example, according to Lewis and
Short, the Latin word Augustanus means “Of or belonging to an emperor.” Likewise, Christianus, the Latin equivalent of the Greek word Χριστιανός, means “Of or belonging to Christ.” Christians are “those of Christ” (οἱ τοῦ Χριστοῦ) (i.e., “Christ’s); they belong to Christ, as his possessions, because Christians are “slaves of Jesus Christ” (δοῦλοι Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ). Of course, this is why Jesus Christ is known as our “lord,” or Greek κύριος, literally “master” (as in slave-master). Therefore, the words Christianus and Χριστιανός imply slavery. For this reason, these words were applied to Christians by non-Christians as a derogatory epithet, for the condition of servitude (slavery) was ignominious. However, believers in Christ cherished the epithet because it was a honor to be slaves of Christ, unlike other masters.

I somehow agree with Bikkerman, simply because in the book of Romans, according to Paul. He says
(Romans 6:16)

KJV:Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

ESV:Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness?

NIV:Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey—whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness?

AMP:Do you not know that if you continually surrender yourselves to anyone to do his will, you are the slaves of him whom you obey, whether that be to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience which leads to righteousness (right doing and right standing with God)?

Yemen: At least 15 killed in a suicide car bomb
The International Committee for the Red Cross said on Monday that at least 36 people have been killed in two days of fighting in Aden [Fawaz Salman/Reuters]

At least 15 people were killed in a suicide car bomb attack on a checkpoint in southeastern Yemenrun by local forces backed by the United Arab Emirates (UAE), officials and residents said.

Residents said on Tuesday gunmen opened fire on the checkpoint after a suicide bomber drove his booby-trapped car into the checkpoint northeast of Ataq, the capital of the province of Shabwa.

Meanwhile, the Saudi-led Arab coalition has called for an immediate ceasefire in the southern city of Aden, where heavy fighting has erupted between government troops and the southern separatists.

“The coalition renews its call to all parties to ceasefire immediately and end all forms of armed conflict,” the coalition said in a statement cited by the Saudi SPA agency.

“The coalition affirms that it will take all necessary measures to restore security and stability in Aden,” the statement said.

Two days of fighting

The coalition said it regretted that the warring sides did not respond to its earlier calls for restraint and calm.

The International Committee for the Red Cross (ICRC) said late on Monday that at least 36 people have been killed and 185 others wounded in two days of fighting in Aden.

Fighting intensified on Monday after the warring sides began using tank and artillery firepower as the port city remained paralysed.

Separatists’ forces late on Monday advanced on the presidential palace and captured two military camps near Aden international airport, security sources told AFP news agency.

The fighting is taking place between troops loyal to the government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, based in Riyadh, and security forces loyal to the southern separatists which are trained and backed by the United Arab Emirates.

Saudi Arabia and UAE are the main partners in the Arab coalition that has been waging war on the Iran-backed Houthi rebels which took over the Yemeni capital Sanaa in September 2014.

Saudi Arabia seizes more than $100bn in settlements

Saudi Arabia’s Attorney General Sheikh Saud al-Mojeb said that the kingdom has seized more than $100bn in anti-corruption settlements.

The amount – SAR400bn ($106.7bn) – represented various types of assets, including real estate, commercial entities, cash and more, Mojeb said in a statement released by the government’s information office on Tuesday.

He added that the total number of individuals summoned for questioning reached 381, while 65 remained in custody as part of a nationwide “anti-corruption purge”.

The statement came as Saudi authorities released all remaining detainees from the Ritz-Carlton hotel, after more than two months of detention on allegations of corruption.

“There are no longer any detainees left at the Ritz-Carlton,” a Saudi official told Reuters News Agency earlier on Tuesday.

Dozens of royal family members, ministers, and top businessmen were arrested in early November during an “anti-corruption crackdown” launched by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Allegations against those detained included money laundering, bribery, extorting officials.

Those arrested were held collectively in the country’s Ritz-Carton hotel. Meanwhile, the hotel was closed to normal business.

On Saturday, prominent Saudi businessman Prince Alwaleed bin Talal was released as signs of the purge appeared to be winding down. Prince Alwaleed said during an exclusive Reuters interview that there were “no charges” against him.

The crackdown, which came about via a royal decree in November 2017, was in response to “exploitation by some of the weak souls who have put their own interests above the public interest, in order to illicitly accrue money”.

Consolidating power?

Mahjoob Zweiri, a Doha-based professor of contemporary Arab politics, said that the purge is part of Mohammed bin Salman’s plan to consolidate economic, as well as political power in Saudi Arabia.

“That required destroying other economic empires in Saudi Arabia,” he told Al Jazeera.

Zweiri noted that the nature of charges against those who were detained remains unclear, and that there may be more details of cases revealed – but not in the near future.

“There has been a case of mistrust,” he said. “And the authorities will follow up [with those released] to make sure no one is speaking about what happened to maintain the government’s narrative of the story.”

According to Zweiri, the purge was a warning message, and only those who play the “politics” and maintain links to the monarch, will be able to conduct business activities in the kingdom.

“Again it’s about how well linked you are to the new establishment. There is no accountability … the corruption will of course continue – but in different ways”.

Professor Ehrman is more direct in his assertion: Critical scholars are fairly unified today in thinking that Matthew
did not write the First Gospel or John the Fourth, that Peter did not write
2 Peter and possibly not 1 Peter. No other book of the New Testament
claims to be written by one of Jesus’ earthly disciples. There are books by
the apostle of Paul, of course. Thirteen go by his name in the New
Testament, at least seven of which are accepted by nearly all scholars as
authentic. 221
Why, then, do our bibles label the four gospels as Matthew, Mark, Luke and
John? Some scholars, Ehrman being just one, suggest something similar to branding—the
modern advertising term for the commercial practice of soliciting celebrity endorsements
to sell the product. 222 Secondcentury Christians who favored these four gospels had a
choice—either acknowledge the gospels’ anonymous authorship or fake it. The bluff
proved irresistible, and they chose to assign the gospels to apostolic authorities, thereby
illegitimately “branding” the gospels as authoritative.
So let’s see—we have no evidence any book of the Bible, gospels included, were
authored by Jesus’ disciples. Furthermore, most scholars accept Paul’s authorship in only
half of the works attributed to him. Regardless of who authored what, corruptions and
inconsistencies have resulted in more manuscript variants than words in the New
Testament. Lastly, even scholars of textual criticism fail to agree. 223 Why? Because
“considerations depend, it will be seen, upon probabilities, and sometimes the textual critic must weigh one set of probabilities against another.”
224 Furthermore, with regard to
the more complex textual problems, “the probabilities are much more evenly divided and
the critic must sometimes be content with choosing the least unsatisfactory reading or
even admitting that there is no clear basis for choice at all.”225
Expanding on this thought, “Occasionally, none of the variant readings will
commend itself as original, and one [i.e., a textual critic] will be compelled either to
choose the reading that is judged to be the least unsatisfactory or to indulge in conjectural
emendation.”
226 Hmm. Conjectural emendation, conjectural emendation—isn’t that
scholartalk for “educated guess”?
So perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised that, just as Jeremiah bemoaned the “false
pens” of the Old Testament scribes, the thirdcentury church father, Origen, bemoaned
the “false pens” of New Testament scribes:
The differences among the manuscripts have become great, either
through the negligence of some copyists or through the perverse audacity
of others; they either neglect to check over what they have transcribed, or,
in the process of checking, they make additions or deletions as they
please. That was the voice of a thirdcentury church father, commenting on just the first
couple hundred years. We have to wonder what other corruptions occurred in the
seventeen to eighteen centuries that followed. But whatever happened in the centuries
that followed, by the third century scribes entrusted to copy and preserve New Testament
manuscripts modified them.
Sure, many copying errors were unintentional and/or inconsequential. But
Ehrman tells us many others were not only deliberate, and not only significant, but
doctrinally motivated. 228 And this is the scriptural vandalism we care about—the
additions, omissions and alterations, whether deliberate or not, that changed the intended
message of the New Testament manuscripts.
These changes had tremendous impact on the course of Christianity. The insertion
of the Johannine Comma (as was previously discussed) lent false support to the doctrine
of the Trinity. The addition of the last twelve verses of Mark misguided some
Appalachian sects into snakehandling, and many evangelical denominations into the
unintelligible practice of “speaking in tongues.” The altered spin on Jesus’ existence
steered theology toward deification of Jesus and the doctrine of atonement. In the
process, the scribes didn’t transmit the message of Jesus, they transformed it.
One case in which a corruption has been identified and corrected is Acts 8:37.
This verse is not found in the most ancient manuscripts, and appears to be an insertion by
a later scribe. For this reason, it has been dropped from many modern translations,
including the New International Version and the New Revised Standard Version. Should
we look it up, we’ll find the NIV and NRSV, as well as other respected translations,
enumerate Acts 8:37, but leave it completely blank.

Take another example. Bruce M. Metzger tells us Acts 15:34 was unquestionably
inserted by copyists. 229 He is not alone in this opinion. Again, both the New International
Version and the New Revised Standard Version enumerate this verse, but leave it blank.
The New King James, however, retains it, as do the Latin bibles.
In similar fashion, many other New Testament verses have been dropped from the
most reputable bibles, such as the NIV and NRSV, but retained in the New King James
version. The most notable omissions are: Matthew 17:21, 18:11; Mark 7:16, 9:44, 9:46,
11:26; part of Luke 9:56, 17:36, 23:17; John 5:4; Romans 16:24; part of 1 John 5:7.  Whereas illegitimate insertions are recognized and omitted by some bibles, others
ignore them. In fact, they not only ignore the illegitimate insertions, but they sanction
them.
Should we wish to document some of these errors, the logical place to start is with
the most respected books of the New Testament, the gospels.  We have already disclosed the fact that Jesus’ disciples did not appear to have
authored the gospels. However, even if they had authored the gospels, Jesus did not seem
to feel his disciples could handle everything he wanted to tell them (John 16:12—“I still
have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now”). He considered them to
be of little faith (Matthew 8:26, 14:31, 16:8, and Luke 8:25), lacking understanding
(Matthew 15:16), and despaired over having to bear with that “faithless and perverse
generation …” (Luke 9:41).
So perhaps we shouldn’t be particularly disturbed to learn that the disciples did
not author the gospels. Perhaps they weren’t the best men for the job. After all, those who
should have known Jesus best—his own relatives—thought him crazy (Mark 3:21 and John 8:48), and the very people to whom he was sent rejected him (John 1:11). So the
issue of greatest concern shouldn’t be who authored the gospels, but whether they are
reliable.
To use the book of Matthew as an example, several passages raise both eyebrows
of the speculative reader. Matthew 2:15 asserts that Jesus was taken to Egypt “to fulfill
what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet, ‘Out of Egypt I have called my
son.’” Well, that’s the proposal. However, exactly which scripture was Jesus’ detainment
in Egypt supposed to fulfill? Hosea 11:1. So what does Hosea 11:1 say, exactly? “When
Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son.”
A scriptural match—no?
No.
The match only looks good if we stop reading. Should we continue to the next
verse, the full passage reads, “When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I
called my son. The more I called them, the more they went from me; they kept sacrificing
to the Baals, and offering incense to idols” (Hosea 11:12, NRSV). Taken in context, we
can only apply this passage to Jesus Christ if, at the same time, we assert that Jesus
worshipped idols.
Similar errors abound. A short two verses later, Matthew 2:17 comments on
Herod’s genocide of the infants of Bethlehem with the words, “Then was fulfilled what
had been spoken through the prophet Jeremiah: ‘A voice was heard in Ramah, wailing
and loud lamentation, Rachel weeping for her children; she refused to be consoled,
because they are no more’” (Matthew 2:17, NRSV).
One minor problem.

The referenced Old Testament passage, Jeremiah 31:15, refers to an actual event
in history, namely the abduction of Rachel’s children, along with those of the Israelite
community, by Sargon, the king of Assyria. The scriptural parallel is not just strained and
stressed, it is nonexistent. So too with Matthew 27:10, which references a quote in
Jeremiah 32:69. In this case, the referenced quote simply isn’t there. Furthermore,  Matthew 27:10 speaks of a potter’s field, priced at thirty pieces of silver. Jeremiah 32:69
speaks of Hanamel’s field, priced at seventeen shekels of silver. Both were actual
transactions separate in time and place. Any effort to claim “fulfilment” of previous
scripture is capricious at best.
And the list goes on.  We can well understand why some New Testament authors may have sought
validation through claiming fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies. However, this tactic
backfires when referenced scripture turns out to be misremembered, misapplied or
frankly nonexistent. Rather than conferring legitimacy, such errors render the document,
as well as the author, sadly suspect.
Having touched on some of these errors, now let’s look at a short (and by no
means complete) list of transparent inconsistencies.

CAN IS RELIGIONISING POLITICS

0

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has begun subterranean mobilization of Christians in the country in preparation for the 2019 general elections. In CAN’s most recent election-related stunt, particularly on social media, Christians were instructed to shun Muslim candidates (especially President Muhammadu Buhari) and to vote massively for Christian candidates instead.

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) condemns CAN’s resort to acrobatic religiousity in the political arena. It is parochial, pernicious, myopic and unpatriotic.

Politicisation of religion will not take us anywhere in this country. It is to the glory of our gymnastic religiousity that we are clever devils today. In spite of the proliferation of churches and mosques on our streets, our paradoxical criminality has no equal under the sun. Is this the time to dig deeper into religious zealotry by indulging in religious politics?

MURIC calls on Nigerians to reject CAN’s attempt to drag Nigeria into the abyss of another religious crisis over the 2019 general elections. It is crude, naïve and infantile. We urge citizens not to allow excellence to be sacrificed on the altar of mediocrity. Serious nations focus on result-oriented criteria like credibility, pedigree, ability to deliver, high level patriotism, farsightedness and industry. Nigeria should be the issue, not primordial sentiments like religion and ethnicity.

MURIC’s advice to Nigerian Muslims: Don’t vote for religion. Shun ethnic blindness. Afterall, many of those who corruptly enriched themselves are Muslim politicians. Vote according to your conscience. Those who stole billions of naira from the public treasury did not think of their Muslim brothers when they were stealing. They were driven by egocentricity, not by their love for Islam. If a Christian candidate has the right qualities, vote for him. This is about Nigeria, not about the mosque. We will cross our bridges when we get to them.

In a nutshell, we urge responsible Christians all over the country to ignore CAN’s pernicious and tortuous propaganda of ‘Christians vote for Christians’. Nigerian Muslims should vote for candidates trusted for delivery of the dividends of democracy, not for religion. Looters who try to deceive Nigerians in 2019 will have themselves to blame if Muslims, Christians and traditionalists can come together to shun corrupt elements in society during the 2019 elections. Imams, pastors and priests should publicly rain curses on looters to keep them at bay.

THE SAGGING SAGA

THE SAGGING SAGA

BY
SANNI KAY. YUSUF

The origin of sagging suffices a reason to despise the nonsensical style. The manner in which the style is carried out is enough a factor to shun the rubbish. The calibre of fellows the dress is common with is enough a propellant to distance oneself from the apparent trash. But it is seriously worrying that Nigerians may never cease to embrace anything that has its root from the west without sieving its rationale.

Placing the trousers’ band (the belt area) beneath the waist, paving the way for the undergarment (which is supposed to be uncompromisingly hidden) to be freely visualised by all and sundry is an act detestable by common logic. Until sagging broke out from some American prisoners a few years ago, wearing the trousers firmly to the waist and keeping undercloth from people’s view used to be a universal morality. How on earth is it reasoning-friendly that criminals whose trousers could not match up with their wastes on account of reduction in body structure become dressing models? What could possibly be wrong with youths and parents who acquire such for their growing children?

Sagging isn’t a dress-style that fits the wearer. Any rational person will attest to the truism that it does disfigure rather than adorn the body. The wearer consistently, repeatedly battles with driving it up because it is not normally, reasonably worn.

It further baffles that those whose undergarments -pants, boxer-shorts – are usually extremely, penalisably dirty, too, do take to sagging. Palapala ilu apala!!! If they cover them up, who will be privy to their unkempt life? What do we call that? Severe stupidity!

The most excruciating is the involvement of ladies. I wonder how a lady who, by African standard, should jealously, meticulously, religiously keep her underwear from the reach of the opposite gender, will expose same in the insane name of sagging. That’s worrying.

Another Step Taken – Knowislam.com.ng

0

AlhamduliLlah, at knowislam.com.ng, we have taken another step in bringing pristine Islam closer to the people in a world where rationalists, modernists and liberals are the representatives of the Deen in the sight of non-Muslims. Earlier, we stated our intent to make the website available for scholars of the deen who are on the Qur’an and Sunnah based on the understanding of the pious predecessors and how to contribute our own quota in seeing to the psychological, spiritual and financial challenges of reverts to Islam. To the glory of Allah, we have added new sections to the website. These are the sections we now have on the website;

  • Articles on Islam

This section is for articles on Islam from a generalized perspective.

  • Comparative Religion

This section contains articles on comparative religion. This is an attempt to equip visitors with knowledge of comparative religion as a defense against the never-stopping bishops, evangelists, rabbi and adherents of other faiths that have taken it upon themselves to attack Muslims.

  • News on Islam

This section brings to us news going on in the Muslim World. It also addresses plots of the islamophobes, their activities and updates us on how these issues are being dealt with.

  • Rebuttals

This section is a home to hundreds of rebuttals to lies and propaganda against Islam and Muslims. Articles that correct misleading headlines to disparage Islam and Muslims.

  • Islamic Poems

Unlike music, poems are permissible in Islam. Visitors can find beneficial poems in this section. We pray this would reduce if not eradicate people’s love for music.

  • The Reverts’ Corner

This is a newly added section for reverts to Islam. We think that we cannot ignore people once they embrace Islam. After lots of deliberations as regards having a functioning plan for reverts, we came up with this section as a little contribution from us. This Reverts’ corner has three sub-categories,

_ Reverts’ Spiritual Challenges

For someone who was not never a Muslim, having to wear the Khimar or Niqob, observe solah at their proper times, memorizing adhkars might be challenging. This sub-section was created to look at the spiritual challenges of reverts and how to help them overcome it.

_ Reverts’ Psychological Challenges

Last year, we initiated “Host a Revert” for reverts who have to celebrate ‘Eid alone and we are continuing this year, In Shaa Allah because we know ‘Eid alone could be depressing. This section looks into the psychological implication of being a revert, addresses it and ways to overcome this challenges. We know that many reverts just need someone to talk to, they need a place to belong to, home away from home and Muslims to call their brothers and sisters.

_ Reverts’ Financial Challenges

Visitors can visit this sub-section to read articles purposely for the sake of soliciting for reverts who have verified problems. This is not limited to health or hunger issues, there are many reverts who are old and willing to go to madrasah but the thought of how to sustain their family is challenging. It is worthy to note that many of them lose their jobs once they embrace Islam.

  • Islamic Scholars Arena

A careful study of the lives of many Muslims and non-Muslims would bring us to the conclusion that many preachers and “Islamic Singers” are known more than Islamic Scholars, the former not going beyond the circle of students of knowledge. In an attempt to bring the works of scholars closer to the people, we have created this section with sub-sections.

For now, the sub-sections we have for the Islamic Scholars Arena  are;

_ Sheikh Muhammad ibn Abdul-Wahab’s Collections

_ Sheikh Ibn Baaz’s Collections

_ Sheikh ibn Al-Uthaymeen’s Collections

_ Sheikh Al-albanee’s Collections

These sub-sections also have categories under them. We are looking forward to contents and also other present Scholars we can add to the list. We hope to get contents including their books, videos and audios that would be posted in the categories under the sub-sections for each of the Islamic Scholars.

  • Sahih Hadeeth Collections

This section is for publishing authentic hadeeths. It has two sub-sections; Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.

Note:

At knowislam.com.ng , enlightening Muslims and Non-Muslims about pristine Islam is our priority. We are Muslims on the Qur’an and Sunnah based on the understanding of the pious predecessors and we are not apologetic about it. Meanwhile, we have no affiliation wit the takfereeyyah or those who are out to label those they think are not of the same ideology with them.

We do things together with non-Muslims, liberals, Modernists and Rationalists with extremists kept at a distance. We do things with them not because we are compromising but because we believe that those who are sick need doctors not those and this does not hinder us from telling them what pristine Islam is all about.

It is our hope that in years to come, many Muslims will understand their religion, practicing based on the Qur’an and Sunnah not of whims and desires. We envisage a world where non-Muslims will not consider Muslims to be repugant or retarded. A world where they would gather to write lies and propaganda against Islam and one of them would say, “remember those guys @knowislam.com.ng”

All articles on knowislam.com.ng are free to be used and distributed. Those who want to place adverts on the website can get in touch with us.

Welcome, to a future that begins today! May Allah accept these humble efforts as acts of ‘Ibaadah. Ameen
