OVER TO US By Lan Rey Hassan
In recent years, the ongoing media frenzy has forced muslims to resign to a demeaning and defensive role whenever arguments are steered as regards the moral injunctions of Islam and how they fall heroically short of the societal notion of morality.
Ruefully, muslims now perceive the ignoble role- no more as a momentary one and a mean towards the end, but as the end itself. So appalling is the situation that this fight to prove the leniency and morality of Islam has led many to neglecting the teaching of those who are already muslims- the leniency, reason and beatitude embedded in Islam.
A good example is how muslims are quick to grab their keypads and clear their throats whenever a non-Muslim accuses Islam of misogynistic treatment of women, and consequently the muslim e-warriors telling their mothers- who need their help in the kitchen- that they are busy teaching non-Muslims how much Islam venerates the status of women in the society, and would therefore be unable to help out. Meanwhile, taking care of one’s mother takes precedence over Dawah when the two cannot be homogenized.
Narrated Mu’aawiyah ibn Jaahimiah al-Sulami (May Allah be pleased with him) said: I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allaah, I want to go for Jihad (battle) with you, seeking thereby the Face of Allah and the Hereafter. He said, “Woe to you! Is your mother still alive?” I said, Yes. He said, “Go back and honour her.” Then I approached him from the other side and said: O Messenger of Allaah, I want to go for Jihad with you, seeking thereby the Face of Allah and the Hereafter. He said, “Woe to you! Is your mother still alive?” I said, Yes. He said, “Go back and honour her.” Then I approached him from in front and said, O Messenger of Allah, I want to go for Jihad with you, seeking thereby the Face of Allah and the Hereafter. He said, “Woe to you! Is your mother still alive?” I said, Yes. He said, “Go back and honour her (lit. stay by her feet), for there is Paradise.” (Ibn Maajah, Hadith No 2781)
As rueful as the depicted situation looks, the drive down a downhill course engulfs almost all spheres of our lives and practical examples are too many to be cited.
We often find muslims trying to show the world (internet) how peaceful Islam is and how much it enjoins the employment of wisdom in calling to it, only for him to cite horrendous, murder-inspiring biblical quotations and dubbing “the god who sent that a blood-thirsty, terrorist and psychologically unstable one” while Allah clearly says:
“And insult not those whom they (disbelievers) worship besides Allah, lest they insult Allah wrongfully without knowledge. Thus We have made fair-seeming to each people its own doings; then to their Lord is their return and He shall then inform them of all that they used to do”[Al-Anaam 6:108] ”.
This is a reminder to us all, that we are neglecting ourselves and one-another and placing more focus on arguing with non-Muslims who -try as you may- will not stop to tag Islam a terrorist religion until there are no more terrorist attacks being perpetuated under the cloak of Islam. And verily, if we were to achieve that, then it is our brothers who we will first engage and explain those verses that call to Jihad to, not they, who will not believe on basis of conviction but what they see from you faithfuls.
Propagation of Da’wah between the muslims is more important than engaging the non-muslims in arguments, even if they insult Islam.
No matter how humiliating their words may be, the humiliation cannot stand up to that begotten from taking up a routine defensive position and trying to prove to them how muslims should “Say something good or be quiet” while another of our brother garnishes his comment just underneath ours with “motherfu***** idiots”- as his khutbatul haajah. (opening prayer)
It is time we focused on ourselves and give those same lectures we give to the non-Muslims about Islam being a religion of peace, love, morals, and noble placement and roles of women in the society (which has as its basic constituent: her husband’s house) -to muslims.
