Not long ago, I was travelling to another town with other students for an exam. No thanks to the abnormal now normal African timing, we left very late.

Around 8pm, we were still on the road. By this time, the other students were receiving calls from home. “Hello Mummy, I’m tired o”, one student would say. “Daaadyy, I’m hungry ehn. I haven’t eaten since” and others are what I was hearing from the other students.

This incident alone coupled with others I have seen is enough to drive someone to tears. I unlocked my phone but no missed calls from a Daddy, mummy, brother, Sibling or Niece. After a while, I smiled. I smiled because the calls they received cannot match the calls I received or the several messages in my WhatsApp. “Bro Lucas, where are you?, Have you gotten to your destination? Can you make it throughout the exam periods because of your health? Should we assign someone to follow you down in case you need one or two things?” were the messages.

My mind also raced back to the first year after I embraced Islam and it was time for ‘Eid. There was nowhere to go to! Christmas, I could not! Alhamdulillah, the years after were met with different invites to celebrate ‘ Eid with together.

Yes, reverts do have financial challenges after being neglected by their families, Spiritual challenges because what they have embraced is something new to them, we also cannot ignore the psychological implications of being a revert.

To those who accept us, received us in their homes, saw us as their own, replaced the friends we used to know with a tie stronger than that of brotherhood, the ones who became our fathers and our mothers, the ones who understand us not judge us, the ones who took their time to teach us about the deen, JazakumLlahu khayr.

Alhamdulillah, we have created a section, “Reverts Corner” with three sub-categories, “Reverts’ Psychological, Financial and Spiritual Challenges” and they’ll start to function soon, In shaa Allah.

Oh reverts! Verily in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest! Know this, then if any good comes your way, it would be an addition not a priority.

In Shaa Allah, we are still organizing the “Host A Revert” this ‘Eid. May Allah make it easy. Ameen
