Introduction to the refutation of Robert Spencer's, "The truth about Muhammad (The founder of world's intolerant Religion)

Know Islam, Know Paradise

In the name of Allah, the most beneficent, the most merciful,

Like all faiths, religions, ideology and beliefs, Islam is not free from criticism. Different critics of Islam have emerged centuries on centuries and this dates back to the days of prophet Muhammad (Pbuh). The likes of Abu Jahl, Abu Lahab did not only criticize the prophet, they also hated him, a trait found in almost all critics of Islam.

In our contemporary world, major critics of Islam are from the west. These critics mostly mix the religious aspect of Islam with the political aspect and vice versa. While it is true that these two concepts are intertwined, it takes a crucial study and detailed knowledge of Islam to speak on these. Worthy to note that these two (study and knowledge) must be from the authentic sources; The Qur’an and Sunnah.

In shaa Allah, we will take a look into Robert Spencer’s book, “The truth about Muhammad (The founder of the most intolerant religion in the world)”. This book was written to demean and disparage the person of the prophet Muhammad (pbuh). It is also an attempt to justify the misconception that the Qur’an and the life of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) are the bedrock of terrorism. The author also aimed at demonizing Islam so the average Muslim can denounce Islam.

The theme of the book is “Jihad” that was erroneously defined by the author. He was not only mischievous and deceptive with his definition of Jihad, he displayed total ignorance of the topic. To him, Jihad has to do with brutality, horror, fear, dominance, blood and of course, terror. He also decided to study islam from and define Islam by the deeds of people who do not make up to one percent of the entire population of Muslims.

We consider this author, Robert Spencer to be ignorant, mischievous, deceptive, misleading and a threat to the peace of humanity. For the sake of those who need to learn, we will refute all the points he raised in his book which are lies about Prophet Muhammad. We will make an introduction of this refutation by explaining Jihaad.

“Jihaad” is an Arabic term that literally means effort, struggle, strive in contrast to the myopic definition given to it by haters of Islam, “holy war”. In Islam, Jihaad is any act that is done in service to Islam or Allah. Let us take a quick look at how Jihaad is bing used in Isamic texts,

Fadalah ibn Ubaid reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

الْمُجَاهِدُ مَنْ جَاهَدَ نَفْسَهُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ

The one who strives in the way of Allah the Exalted is he who strives against his soul.

Source: Musnad Ahmad 23445, Grade: Sahih

Allah also says in he Qur’an,

قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَن زَكَّاهَا وَقَدْ خَابَ مَن دَسَّاهَا

He has succeeded who purifies the soul, and he has failed who corrupts the soul.

Surat Ash-Shams 91:9-10

And Allah said:

يَوْمَ لَا يَنفَعُ مَالٌ وَلَا بَنُونَ إِلَّا مَنْ أَتَى اللَّهَ بِقَلْبٍ سَلِيمٍ

It will be a day when there will be no benefit in wealth or children, but only in one who comes to Allah with a pure heart.

Surat Ash-Shu’ara 26:88-89

That Jihad means to strive, struggle on Allah’s cause and this struggle includes purifying one’s soul is what Robert Spencer is not telling us. As a Hyprocrite, he only defined jihad and other Islamic terms from his myopic and bigoted perspective.

However, it should be noted that Jihaad can take different forms which includes fighting against the oppressor or enemy. Indeed, there is no sense in folding one’s arms when you can stand against oppression. What good is there in watching while your brothers, sisters and loved ones are being killed? Standing against oppression is an act of peace.

As someone who hates Islam with an audience that despise Muslims, he demonized fighting one’s enemy without bringing in other religions. If we were to agree with him that Jihaad means war, then “Jihaad” took place in the bible. We read,

1 samuel 15:3;

“Now go, attack the Amalekites and totally destroy all that belongs to them. Do not spare them; put to death men and women, children and infants, cattle and sheep, camels and donkeys.”

This “Jihaad” in the Bible seems different. It is not limited to just killing the enemies, it includes donkeys, camels and even infants. We take a step further by looking into the meaning of CRUSADE. According to the advanced English dictionary, Cursade is defined thus,

“Each of a series of medieval military expeditions made by Europeans to recover the Holy Land from the Muslims in the 11th, 12th, and 13th centuries.

‘the fanaticism engendered by the Crusades’

If we were to start talking about a holy war, we should spend years talking about crusade and the crimes of the crusaders. Today, this crusade is given a reformed meaning though Jihaaad retains its meaning which is free from the mischievous definition given to it by the likes of Robert Spencer.

Conclusively, in this introduction to the refutation of Robert spencer’s book, we think it is proved that if anything like Holy war exists in its literal form, it is crusade not Jihaad.
