DELE OSHINOWO INAUGURATES INTER-RELIGIOUS COUNCIL
To strengthen religious tolerance among residents of different faiths and beliefs, today, Mayor Dele Oshinowo inaugurated the Nigeria Inter-Religous Council (NIREC), Agboyi-Ketu Chapter.
The inauguration was performed at the chairman’s office, comprising of 14 members, 7 Christians and 7 Muslims.
The body will be coordinated by two chairmen, one as a Muslim, while the other a Christian.
Speaking through the Secretary to the Local Government, Hon Seyi Ikuejuyone, the chairman admonished them to see their new position as an opportunity to promote peaceful co-existence amongst residents.
He further charged them to prepare sermons that will address social disorderliness.
“Good governance can only triumph where peace reigns, as an administration, we are determined to strengthen religious tolerance and work for the sustenance of peace”
” Thus, we are delighted to have you in the ship as partakers in the wheel of progress, therefore, we want your body to design frameworks and help us with ideas that will promote peaceful coexistence” He said
In his remarks, the chairman (Muslim), Alhaji (Dr) Sulaimon Ibrahim appealed to the chairman to look into the area of empowerment, stressing its importance as a tool to combat social vices, and immune youth against unemployment.
He, therefore, thanked the Lagos State Government headed by Mr Akinwunmi Ambode for allowing grassroots participation in its organogram.
” A government bringing into line grassrooters in his plans will surely have thoughts to address problems from the root, this is evident in Lagos, an initiative for other states to emulate” Dr. Ibrahim said.
Likewise, the chairman (Christian), Rev P.B Ojo hailed the governor, and appealed to the council chairman to incorporate them into the necessary activities of local council.
The body also demanded for a befitting office and Identity cards in order to aid a smooth operation.
Responding, the council chairman promised to look into their demands and get back to them soonest with a favorable response.
