CAN SHAKING A BLOODY TABLE By Bashir Lucas Samson Lukman

If the Catholic Church knew what dark history she would be writing for Rwanda and Rwandas, perhaps she might have dealt away with propaganda, brainwashing, even incite violence in the name of God. Though took a while, the church had to apologize for its role in the massacre of over 800,000 Rwandans; the Tutsis being the major victim and the Hutus at the other end. We can ask, of what importance is the apology to the Rwandans that lost their loved ones in the massacre.

 Jeremiah 6:22-23

22 Thus says the Lord:
“Behold, a people is coming from the north country,
    a great nation is stirring from the farthest parts of the earth.
23 They lay hold on bow and javelin;
    they are cruel and have no mercy;
    the sound of them is like the roaring sea;
they ride on horses,
    set in array as a man for battle,
    against you, O daughter of Zion!”

The church successfully incited violence with verses like the one above. People were taught at Mass that the Tutsis were their enemy and literally taught people to destroy, kill just as the Israelites did to the Amalekites at Yahweh’s command. We read,

“Now go and strike Amalek and devote to destruction all that they have. Do not spare them, but kill both man and woman, child and infant, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.” (1 Samuel 15:3)

Bodies of Tutsis were everywhere lying on the streets left to decay. No one was spared, not even the babies. Faced with death, some Tutsis ran to the Catholic Church for shelter. At the Ntarama Catholic Church where over five thousand Tutsis were killed, the people had shelter in the building but not in the custodians. It wasn’t just at Ntarama, Catholic parishes at  Nyamata, Nyarubuye, Cyahinda, Nyange, and Saint Famille were just a few of the churches that served as slaughter slabs and sanctuaries of death. They were presented to their killers and they were killed. Tens of thousands of them were slaughtered right in church before the priests who had preached to them of the Love of God through Christ, who had taught them of the 10 commandments, who had taught them to live, to love and to fear God.

Some of the priests and nuns who had welcomed the people to the church turned on them, hacking them to death. At other times they watched on while the people were slaughtered. One of such was Father Wenceslas Munyeshyaka indicted for murder and rape in the 1994 genocide. He walks the street of Paris today a free man. Another is Father Athanase Seromba, who led the Nyange parish massacre where over 2000 people were killed. He had lured the desperate Tutsis into his parish before he ordered a bulldozer to pull down the building and then allowed the Hutu Militia in to finish off the survivors.  Archbishop Perraudin was by far the most senior of the priest that had not just hands but necks and head in the massacre. He was behind the hateful ideology of Hutu Power that gave rise to the use of Jeremiah 6: 23 as the Biblical base of the massacre of the northern invaders.

It is 2018 and the Christian Association of Nigeria is on a similar course. Have we not had enough bloodshed? Are we so idle that we cannot make it to Central African Republic. Recently, CAN had been shaking a bloody table, no thanks to the Media that prides in controversies selling sensational headlines. Are we going the way of Rwanda? Just like the Church in Rwanda, Christians are now made to believe that the “Radical and Jihadist” Hausa/Fulani Muslims are coming for their heads.

In a speech given by the Ex-president of America, Barack Obama, in a bid to sensitize people said, “ISIL does not represent Islam. It is not in any way representative of the attitudes of the overwhelming Majority of Muslims“. He furthered, “…those types of stereotypes are counterproductive, they are wrong, they will lead, I think to greater recruitment into terrorist organizations overtime if this becomes somehow defined as a “Muslim problem” as opposed as ‘opposed to terrorist problem“.

Igho Hakeehm Ohwojeheri wrote,

“Do you know that the source of the information that the reason she is being held is because she refuse to renounce her faith came only from the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN)?

Do you know that the reason Boko Haram may have persisted in keeping her is because CAN celebrated her allege refusal to convert as a defeat of Boko Haram?

Do you know that CAN spoke person said, few days ago, that if the little girl is killed by Boko Haram it would lead to a religious war?

Religious war is what Boko Haram wants so if they really believed the CAN spokespersons, I am sure the girl won’t be alive as we speak. CAN does not mind endangering the life of the young Christian girl in other to incite and instigate Christians against their Muslim neighbours.”

Nigerians are enjoined not to fall for propaganda especially from the Media on political and religious grounds. Hence, there is a need to be rational and buy what is sensible irrespective of what any pastor, bishop or the self acclaimed Ilorin “Chief Imam of Yoruba land” like Imam says. This is Nigeria not Rwanda.
