Fiqh of Brotherhood as a means of Peaceful Coexistence

Alhamdulillaah wasalaatu wasalaam ‘ala rasuulillaah

Brotherhood (الأخوة) is from the word brother (أخ). In extended sense, brotherhood is based upon good character with others, treating others the way we want to be treated, and uniting together upon common values. Allaah created man assigning different roles, duties, rights and responsibilities to each for the progress of humanity. Family stems from union or marriage of a man and a woman, families make up a community, communities make up a nation, and nations make up the world.

Brotherhood has three levels of grade: religion, family, and humanity. Islam has established rights of people around (Muslim and Non-Muslim); neighbors, neighboring communities, neighboring states, neighboring countries… Family or member of our family (Muslim and Non-muslim) has more rights confirmed by the text of Quraan and Hadith. Also, brothers of religion have incomparable rights and love engrained in them. So, if your wife, who is now your family and living with you, is a Muslimah would you maltreat her?! Violation of neighbor’s righs, violation of family’s rights and violation of religion’s rights. To commit adultery with neighbor’s partner attract more anger of Allaah than committing adultery with unknown person though both are forbidden, why? Because neighbor’s rights were established in Islam. What of child that kill his parent? Ordinarily, every living soul will doubt if Allah will forgive him, why? Because Allaah has enjoined us to love and respect our parent. What of a Muslim that kill his Muslim brother?!

The happening now is hatred among brothers, families and neighbors which is divergence from Islamic teachings. Islam encourages mutual respect, honor, fundamental rights which are basic needs of peaceful coexistence. In fact, a Muslim that hate another Muslim need ‘aqeedah (belief) assessment – there must be problem(s) somewhere.

Treatment of Neighbors in Islam

Islam enjoin kind treatment of neighbors (Muslims and Non-muslims) and affirm their rights. Allah says: “Worship Allah and join none with Him in worship, and do good to parents, kinsfolk, orphans, Al-Masakin (the poor), the neighbor who is near of kin, the neighbor who is a stranger, the companion by your side, the wayfarer (you meet), and those (slaves) whom your right hands possess. Verily, Allah does not like such as are proud and boastful” Q4:36. Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “Jibreel kept urging me that neighbors should be treated well until I thought he would make them heirs.” Al-Bukhaari (6015) and Muslim (2625)

The Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “By Allah, he does not believe! By Allah, he does not believe! By Allah, he does not believe!” It was said, “Who is that, O Allah’s Messenger (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him)?” He said, “That person whose neighbor does not feel safe from his evil.” Bukhari 6016. In another narration, Abu Hurayrah narrated that the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him not annoy his neighbour.” Al-Bukhari (5185) and Muslim (47) etc. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “The neighbor of a home has more right to the home.” Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1368.

It worth mentioning that ritual acts of worship will not protect anyone from the Hellfire if they are evil to their neighbors (believers and nonbelievers). Abu Hurairah reported: A man said, “O Messenger of Allah, a woman prays, fasts, and gives charity often, but she harms her neighbor with her sharp tongue.” The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: She will be in the Hellfire. The man said, “O Messenger of Allah, another woman prays, fasts, and gives in charity very little, but she does give some cheese and she does not harm her neighbor with her tongue.” The Prophet said:She will be in Paradise. Musnad Ahmad 9383
